President’s Remarks Dick Bopp
In last month’s column we talked about change and how we all needed to work together—one person at a time—to face any unknown surprises that may be lurking in our future.

Well, it didn’t take long to get tested. Witness our last MiniTech on March 31st where the speaker, Bob Launsby, from Launsby Consulting was stranded in Colorado on the morning of the event due to an exceptionally long flight delay. What to do? Jeff Voelker, our Program Co-Chair, got in contact with Bob and the very capable Doug Mason, AV Director at Hennepin Technical College, to successfully set up an impromptu Webinar which Jeff ran from his laptop. As a result 36 attendees got to see and hear Bob’s 3 hour presentation on DOE for Injection Molding. This is the stuff—the out-of-the- box thinking and can-do attitude — that makes me so proud of our Board…and Section overall.

Spotlight on the Board
Dick Bopp, Membership Chairman
This month’s Spotlight features Tom McNamara, our very able Councilor, who as you’ll soon read has had a very long and distinguished history in plastics and the SPE. In fact, I did a quick check of our membership roles and learned that indeed Tom is amongst a handful of our most senior section members and the most senior of our directors, beating out Dave Erickson by exactly 4 months.
Being with the Section for only 13 years, I’m a relative new comer. But, I’ve come to rely greatly upon Tom’s wisdom and experience. He is a true servant leader and a pleasure to work with. So, here in his own words is Tom’s story. Please don’t hesitate to take him up on his offer to talk to you about the SPE, the history of our section…or just plain shop. I have been involved in the plastics industry for 36 years and have been an SPE member for 35 of those years. I guess that makes me one of the longest term members in our Section and I have really enjoyed the professional networking and continuing educational opportunities that SPE has offered me.
Winnipeg, MB
My work career started after graduation from UW – Stout with a BS degree in a pilot program for Polymer Engineering. Dr. Arnold Piersoll, as the head of the Polymer Department, crafted the program for a handful of us eager, want-to-be plastic professionals. After a brief internship at UFE, Inc, I took my first full-time employment at Thermotech as a Tom McNamara Project Engineer. I had the great pleasure of mentoring under one of the icons of the Upper Midwest Section – Tony Norris. I would certainly not have progressed to the positions in both industry and the SPE had it not been for the excellent counseling I received under Tony’s direction. Our Section now gives out a Tony Norris Scholarship Award in his honor. As a progression within Thermotech, I moved from Project Engineer to Research, Development, & Engineering Supervisor, to Assistant Director of RD&E, to my current position as Director of RD&E. Thermotech is a precision injection molder and contract assembler of all types of thermoplastics and thermosets, from the lower cost workhorse engineering polymers to the Continued on Page 9 4

SPE has a long-standing policy that members who become unemployed can request a dues waiver for up to two renewal periods while they seek employment. Using this membership benefit is easy! When an unemployed member receives his/her renewal notice, he/she should write “unemployed” on the notice and fax (+1 203-775-8490) or mail it back to SPE, or call the SPE customer relations staff at +1 203-740-5403. SPE staff will renew the membership, as an unemployed member, and note the date of the renewal. Prior to the end of the renewal period, the unemployed member will be sent a renewal reminder, with the assumption that he or she is likely re-employed. If not, the member can again fax, mail, or call SPE to have unemployed member status extended for another year.

Presidents Remarks, continued from Page 3 We have also had some changes/exchanges in the guard: Dan Mishek has moved from Education Chair to Membership Chair. Check out his comments in Membership Matters. Dave Erickson has agreed to serve at a new position as Section Ambassador. He’ll greet new members at our events and help answer any questions they might have about the Society. Shilpa Manjure has moved from her position as our exceptional Special Events Chair to the Education Chair. Eric Swensied has taken over Special Events Chair and has already made his mark as the originator/leader of our newly instituted and highly successful monthly Networking Event. He has also begun preparation for our Golf Outing on July 31st. (Please be sure to check out the announcement elsewhere in this issue…and save the date.) Last but not least, I am very pleased to welcome LuVerne Erickson, Chief Chemical Engineer, at Clariant Corporation’s Masterbatch Division in New Hope as a newly elected board member. Verne has been with the Section for a number of years and has graciously agreed to help out on both the Program and Membership Committees. In fact, he has volunteered to make a SPE-red masterbatch for a very special project that Dan Mishek has initiated using Vista Technology’s rapid prototyping capability. You’ll be hearing more about it very soon. I think you will agree that we have assembled an outstanding group of volunteers who are committed to serve us all for the coming year. With their inspiration and hard work, we can anticipate an interesting and rewarding program. I am honored to have the opportunity to join them in this service and look forward to seeing many of you at our next MiniTech on May 19th.
SPOTLIGHT ON THE BOARD – Continued from Page 8 high price, high performance exotic materials. As Director of RD&E, my job function offers many challenging endeavors to find solutions for our customer’s ever-changing requirements. New materials, process techniques, and decorating and assembly technologies are continually being implemented to achieve the desired results. I spearhead our Advanced Engineering Development (AED) program to work with the emerging product needs of our customers. I have co-authored published papers on 3D molded circuitry and plastic gear design for various industries. I have presented industry topics including: Basics of Plastics, Plastic Material Selection Criteria, Metal-to-Plastic Conversion, Plastic Part Design Fundamentals, Design for Manufacturability and Assembly, and Plastic Material Verification. I am a 34 year member of the Hennepin Technical College Plastics Advisory Committee and have participated on the American Gear Manufacture Association (AGMA) – Plastic Gearing Committee for the last four years. I have served the Upper Midwest Section of SPE in many functions over my 35 years of membership. I served as Education Chair (5 yrs), Secretary (3 yrs), Program Chair, Special Events Chair, Vice President, President-Elect, President, and Past President. I took a little break from the Board activities because of term limits and to spend more time with my family but with some real arm twisting from my good friend, Dave Erickson, I came back on the Board as your Councilor in 2006. I am active as your InternationaI Councilor on the Student Activities Committee, the Educational Awards Committee, and the Nominations committee. I have participated at several ANTECs as a moderator for student sessions. I am in my third year as Councilor and am very proud to be representing the Upper Midwest Section on your behalf. Please feel free to contact me with any thoughts on ways to improve our Section or the Society in general. I remain your humble servant. Society of Plastics Engineers • Upper Midwest Section
