THE  SPOTLIGHT:  PASTORS   1:  WHAT  ARE  ELDERS?

THE  SPOTLIGHT:  PASTORS   1:  WHAT  ARE  ELDERS?   Elders  are  the  group  of  rescued,  qualified,  and  competent  men   who  God  has  charged  to  shepherd  the  local  church.

THE  SPOTLIGHT:  PASTORS   1:  WHAT  ARE  ELDERS?   Elders  are  the  group  of  rescued,  qualified,  and  competent  men   who  God  has  charged  to  shepherd  the  local  church.        a:  They  are  shepherds.

On  some  high  moor,  across  which  at  night  hyenas   howl,  when  you  meet  him  sleepless,  far-‐sighted,   weather-‐beaten,  armed,  leaning  on  his  staff,  looking   out  over  his  scaAered  sheep,  every  one  on  his  heart,   you  understand  why  the  shepherd  of  Judea  sprang  to   the  front  of  his  people’s  history,  why  they  gave  his   name  to  their  king,  and  made  him  the  symbol  of   Providence;  why  Christ  took  him  as  the  type,  the   model  of  self-‐sacrifice.     Timothy  Laniak,  quoIng  G.A.  Smith

THE  SPOTLIGHT:  PASTORS   1:  WHAT  ARE  ELDERS?   Elders  are  the  group  of  rescued,  qualified,  and  competent  men   who  God  has  charged  to  shepherd  the  local  church.        a:  They  are  shepherds.      b:  They  are  in  a  plurality.

Acts  14:23,  And  when  they  had  appointed  elders  for   them  in  every  church,  with  prayer  and  fasIng  they   commiAed  them  to  the  Lord  in  whom  they  had  believed.   Acts  20:17,  Now  from  Miletus  he  sent  to  Ephesus  and   called  the  elders  of  the  church  to  come  to  him.     1  Tim  5:17,  Let  the  elders  who  rule  well  be  considered   worthy  of  double  honor,  especially  those  who  labor  in   preaching  and  teaching.

James  5:14,  Is  anyone  among  you  sick?  Let  him  call  for   the  elders  of  the  church,  and  let  them  pray  over  him,   anoinIng  him  with  oil  in  the  name  of  the  Lord.     Philippians  1:1,  Paul  and  Timothy,  servants  of  Christ   Jesus,  to  all  the  saints  in  Christ  Jesus  who  are  at  Philippi,   with  the  overseers  and  deacons:

THE  SPOTLIGHT:  PASTORS   1:  WHAT  ARE  ELDERS?   Elders  are  the  group  of  rescued,  qualified,  and  competent  men   who  God  has  charged  to  shepherd  the  local  church.        a:  They  are  shepherds.      b:  They  are  in  a  plurality.      c:  They  are  qualified.

1  Timothy  3:1-‐7,  The  saying  is  trustworthy:  If  anyone   aspires  to  the  office  of  overseer,  he  desires  a  noble   task.  2  Therefore  an  overseer  must  be  above  reproach,   the  husband  of  one  wife,  sober-‐minded,  self-‐ controlled,  respectable,  hospitable,  able  to  teach,  3   not  a  drunkard,  not  violent  but  gentle,  not   quarrelsome,  not  a  lover  of  money.  4  He  must  manage   his  own  household  well,  with  all  dignity  keeping  his   children  submissive,  5  for  if  someone  does  not  know   how  to  manage  his  own  household,  how  will  he  care

1  Timothy  3:1-‐7  (conInued)     for  God’s  church?  6  He  must  not  be  a  recent  convert,   or  he  may  become  puffed  up  with  conceit  and  fall  into   the  condemnaIon  of  the  devil.  7  Moreover,  he  must   be  well  thought  of  by  outsiders,  so  that  he  may  not  fall   into  disgrace,  into  a  snare  of  the  devil.

THE  SPOTLIGHT:  PASTORS   1:  WHAT  ARE  ELDERS?     2:  WHAT  DO  ELDERS  DO?

THE  SPOTLIGHT:  PASTORS   1:  WHAT  ARE  ELDERS?     2:  WHAT  DO  ELDERS  DO?    a:  Shepherds  lead  the  sheep.

THE  SPOTLIGHT:  PASTORS   1:  WHAT  ARE  ELDERS?     2:  WHAT  DO  ELDERS  DO?    a:  Shepherds  lead  the  sheep.        b:  Shepherds  feed  the  sheep.

THE  SPOTLIGHT:  PASTORS   1:  WHAT  ARE  ELDERS?     2:  WHAT  DO  ELDERS  DO?    a:  Shepherds  lead  the  sheep.        b:  Shepherds  feed  the  sheep.      c:  Shepherds  care  for  and  protect  the  sheep.

Out  of  love,  true  elders  suffer  and  bear  the  brunt  of   difficult  people  and  problems  so  that  lambs  are  not   bruised.  They  bear  the  misunderstanding  and  sins  of   others  so  that  the  assembly  may  live  in  peace.  They  lose   sleep  so  that  others  may  rest.  They  make  great  personal   sacrifices  of  Ime  and  energy  for  the  welfare  of  others.   They  see  themselves  as  men  under  authority.  They   depend  on  God  for  wisdom  and  help,  not  on  their  own   power  and  cleverness.  They  face  the  false  teachers’  fierce

aAacks.  They  guard  the  community’s  liberty  and  freedom   in  Christ  so  that  the  saints  are  encouraged  to  develop   their  gi[s,  to  mature,  and  to  serve  one  another.
