Earth’s Moon • What are the two objects in the picture? – Earth and Moon.

• Where is the sun compared to these 2? – To the right of the picture.

• How do you know? – The half of the earth and the moon on the right hand side is lit up; the left is dark.

Important words • Maria: – The large dark flat areas of the moon.

• Phase: – The portion of the moon reflecting light as seen from earth.

• Waxing phase: – More of the moon’s near side is lit up.

• Waning phase: – Less of the moon’s near side is lit up.

The Moon’s Surface

The Moon’s surface • How did the moon’s craters form? – They formed as objects from space (meteors) collided with the earth. They haven’t changed, since the moon has no atmosphere.

• How were the maria produce? – Lava from below the moon’s crust flowed out and covered parts of the moon’s surface.

The Moon’s motion • The moon makes 1 revolution of the earth every 27.3 days (28 days). • While it revolves around the earth, the moon also rotates about its own axis – this rotation takes.....27.3 days! • What does this mean? – It means we only ever see one half of the moon – the near side of the moon. We NEVER see the far side of the moon.

Phases of the moon • When is the 1st quarter moon visible from earth? – Visible between noon and midnight.

Phases of the moon • When is the 3rd quarter moon visible from earth? – Visible between midnight and noon.
