2013 CommVault Customer Value Survey Summary and Analysis
Executive Summary CommVault is dedicated to providing organizations worldwide with a radically better way to protect, manage and access data and information. CommVault’s flagship solution, Simpana® software, takes the industry’s only truly integrated approach to create significant value for customers large and small across the globe. In July 2013, CommVault surveyed its customer base to document and quantify that value. Dr. MaryAnne Winniford, an expert in survey design and data analysis, helped design the survey and validate the survey data. This paper combines CommVault’s summary of key survey findings with Dr. Winniford’s full analysis.
The Total Value of the Simpana Platform Data protection, application recovery, and data management are still problematic for many organizations. Customers from SMB to Enterprise are grappling with data growth, struggling to make data accessible, and fighting to reduce risk, cost, and the complexity of their IT operations. Traditional total cost of ownership or return on investment (TCO/ROI) analyses tend to focus on hardware and software infrastructure costs, and labor or administrative effects. These are key components of solution value. While critical, CommVault has found that Simpana software drives additional value across three categories that are more broad in both scope and impact: Simplification, Risk Reduction, and Data Value.
1 Simplification & Efficiency
Simpana software integrates all data protection and data management functions into
a single platform—an industry first. By combining archiving, backup, snapshot
management, reporting, secure data access, eDiscovery and data analytics, Simpana
software reduces complexity and infrastructure costs, while improving data protection
and recovery performance and boosting IT operational efficiencies.
2 Risk Reduction
Simpana software drives down risk by reducing operational complexity, improving
recovery efficiency, and minimizing relative exposure to legal issues, compliance failures,
downtime or data loss.
3 Unlocking Data Value
Simpana software unlocks value from managed data by making it easily searchable and
accessible to enhance organizational decision-making, improve employee productivity,
and to help make IT more strategic to the business.

This section summarizes key findings around Simpana software’s value as reported by CommVault’s customers. Details and analysis around these findings follow in Dr. Winniford’s section of this paper. CommVault worked with Dr. Winniford to ensure a random sample of our

customer base: not every customer achieved these results, and not every customer reported that they were satisfied with their investment in Simpana software. However, these results hold true on average across this sample set of customers, and the sample set is large enough to ensure a high level of confidence that new customers can achieve similar results. Per Dr. Winniford, “Out of a total population of approximately 8,000 CommVault customer companies, 331 people responded, leading to a confidence interval of +/- 5.3 at a 95% confidence level. The results presented here, therefore, should be viewed with confidence
