A solid foundation is all about long term SEO and making your site more attractive than your competitors in the search engines. There are many on page factors you can implement and if given the option you should implement each step at the very beginning. This will lessen the load from the beginning and allow you to focus more time on your other off page SEO tasks.

The Best Foundation For Future Proof SEO The top 5 points below are a great SEO guide when developing a new website to ensure it’s fully compliant from the very beginning: 1)

Begin with market research with the focus on understanding your online niche and target customers.

2)

Find Keywords which have good traffic volumes that are highly relevant and have achievable competition levels.

3)

Arrange keywords in such a way, so that they can be placed in categories and sub categories. For example: if you have 5 keywords then you can set a main keyword as the category and the remaining keywords into sub categories. In the example below the main keyword is SEO Services and the other words are subcategories of that word: 

4)

SEO Services o

Local SEO Services

o

National SEO Services

o

International SEO Services

o

Small Business SEO services

Once you complete your keyword research create your content first, then construct your pages around your content.

Organize your pages using the Silo Structure Method

What is the Silo Structure Method? One of the key factors search engines in ranking a website is the theme of an individual page and more importantly a sites overall theme. The Silo Structure Method is one of the most effective ways for you to build a themed based website allowing the search engines to treat your site more favorably.

The secondary benefit of the Silo Structure Method is you’re able to rank more pages and keywords. A few of the important points to consider when building a Silo: 

Gather your main keywords (based on your keyword research) that you would like to rank a site for

Gain an understanding on the supporting keyword terms (see above) and group these under each primary keyword to establish the foundation of the silo structure

Construct a directory and URL structure that enables you to place the relevant pages in their relevant categories

Consider the techniques you will use for the ranking of the homepage and all subpages

An Example of a Silo Structure: The key to an effective Silo Structure is to identify your main keywords and supporting keywords and to construct pages around this entire principle.

Let’s examine the elements of a Silo Structure more closely. You are looking at a Silo structure for a dress maker and you complete your keyword research (taking into consideration keyword volumes and competition). You have decided your main keywords are: o

Dress Maker

o

Wedding Gowns

And your supporting keywords are: o

Bridal Ball Gowns

o

Princess Wedding Gowns

The selection of the supporting keywords is determined by the keyword search volumes. Additionally, these supporting keywords need to be related to the main keywords. In this example, they are both styles of wedding dresses. The next step is to create a directory structure that identifies the layout of the site based on the main and supporting keywords. Listed below is a basic example of a Silo Structure based on the Dress Makers keywords: o

http://dressmaker.com/

o

http://dressmaker.com/wedding-dresses/

o

http://dressmaker.com/wedding-dresses/bridal -ball-gowns/

o

http://dressmaker.com/wedding-dresses/princess-wedding-gowns/

This example highlights a 3 tier Silo Structure where the homepage of the site would be optimized for ‘Dress Maker’. The second tier would be optimized for ‘Wedding Dresses’ and the third tier (built up of 2 pages) would be ‘Bridal Ball Gowns’ and ‘Princess Wedding Gowns’. In order for each page to operate effectively you would need to create ‘unique content’ and complete On Page SEO.

This technique effectively creates theme based pages and a highly effective themed based site, where you build pages and sub-pages that fit within their own sub-categories. This is an example of one arm of an unlimited sized Silo. You can create a small or a large Silo site, however this will be based on the size of your niche, and your ability to create content (always remember that each page needs to contain unique content).

Listed below is another example of a larger Silo Structure. Check out the supporting attached document where we demonstrate a fully complete Silo structure for a Boating website. We examine the main keyword categories and sub-pages that fit within each category. We also highlight a recommended URL set-up for you to use when creating subpage.
