The One-Liner The Underworld thrusts a shovel into that unseen land of sticks and stones, of broken bones, the kingdom of roots. Above the ground the vines frilly dance, its buxom sundrenched bounty is nothing without the sober grind of roots blindly winding into the Earth, the hidden hero of flavour, of place.

Tasting Note There are few finer things than finding a cultivar that not only belongs in modern South Africa but is so PHENOMENALLY tasty – its delicately pithy otherness is hard to describe but searching for the right way to describe it is part of the pleasure.

Producer Details Made by Boutinot is more than just our vineyards and cellars in France, Italy, South Africa and England. It’s our longstanding relationships with hundreds of winegrowers around the world. People in places like Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina, Spain and the USA. We craft our wines by both vinifying fruit from our own vineyards, and by selecting and blending wine from partner growers. Our dedicated product managers (including two Masters of Wine) work hand in hand with our experienced and highly talented winemakers and blenders. Together they bring our winemaking philosophy to life. It's their mission to ensure all Made by Boutinot wines are crafted to taste the way a Boutinot wine should. Never losing sight of our vision to create high quality wines at every price point.

In The Winery From old vine Piekernierskloof fruit blended with younger Paarl fruit (hence Western Cape). Grenache Blanc belongs in South Africa, where drought-resistant cultivars are the only future for this increasingly dry region. 70% 40 year old unirrigated bush vines from Piekernierskloof plus 30% younger bush vines from Paarl (hence WO Western Cape). The Paarl component has been barrel fermented in 4-6 year old 500L French oak. The remainder has been wild fermented in stainless steel with 5g/l residual sugar to round off the spice a little.

Food Recommendations Freshly shucked oysters.
