THE VILLA Hidden Valley Santa Barbara, California, United States

Every so often, art is created with stone and mortar. Whne you first see this elegant stone villa in the hills of Santa Barbara, you are immediately enchanted by the pure pastoral ambience of the Tuscan countryside that pervades it — the gentle sunlight, the rugged stone, and the reverence for the natural surroundings. Perched on a crest with views of the ocean, harbor, and mountains, the secluded estate was designed and built in the 1930s by celebrated architect Wallace Frost. Recently returned from living in Italy, Frost wanted to bring touches of the Old World to the New World, so he designed the two-story, 10,500 -square-foot residence for himself, emulating the classical style of 17thcentury Italian villas with great accuracy. Impeccable attention was paid to every detail, with a classic barrel-tiled roof, wide wood flooring planks, rustic exposed ceiling beams, 18th-century Italian tiles, and sturdy walls of locally quarried stone creating an air of romance and refinement.

THE VILLA CIRCA 1934

Elegant ornamental ironwork encloses a breezy covered veranda, which is accented by handsome stone walls and floors, chiseled wood ceiling beams, stone pillars, and a tranquil fountain. Swinging doors open to a charming interior courtyard; the veranda also accesses the home’s foyer, media room, and spacious gourmet kitchen.

In the home’s grand entry, guests are immediately greeted with the texture and ambiance of an Italian villa. A fireplace cut into the stone, a coat closet, and a discreet powder room are found here. A wood door opens to a private wet bar, a staircase leads to the second level, and French doors open to gardens with a burbling fountain and an alfresco dining area shaded by 100-year-old olive trees.

Grand arched wood doors open to the spacious, sophisticated living room, with its soaring wood-beamed ceiling, 18th-century Italian floor tiles, and carved stone fireplace. An oversized iron-framed window, tucked between built-in floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, reveals panoramic views of the ocean; while double paned-glass doors open to a peaceful patio.

In the streamlined kitchen, modern stainless-steel cabinets are wrapped in marble, and appliances — a double oven, a range, and a double refrigerator — are state-of-the-art. A stone nook houses a pantry, a microwave, and a wine refrigerator; and a hidden door opens to an office loft. The kitchen also accesses the veranda and the formal dining room.

In the cheerful breakfast nook, sunlight floods in through a dramatic arched iron window, which opens at the center to gardens with ocean views, while French doors open to a dining patio. Nearby, an intimate sitting area is warmed by a carved stone fireplace.

The master bath includes a custom leather wardrobe, a walk-in shower, a separate water closet, a rough-honed stone vanity with custom leather cabinets, an oversized antique crowned cathedral mirror, and a stone fireplace in the corner. Antique beveled glass windows offer views of the gardens, and beautiful skylights allow natural light to filter in.

Stylistic themes prevalent elsewhere — stone and brushed-concrete walls, beamed pitched ceilings, and antique beveled glass — continue in the spacious guest suites. Pictured here, a spacious sitting room offers three sets of French doors opening to a balcony that runs the length of the bedroom wing. Visitors will appreciate the comfort and seclusion of the nearby guest apartment, which features a private, skylit bedroom and bath, and a living area with a vintage kitchenette below.
