Last week saw Whickham’s annual diversity week return for another year. With last year’s focus on sexuality this year saw the turn of gender identity. The week saw gender of all identification and all backgrounds accepted, acknowledged and more importantly informed.

The definition of diverse “showing a great deal of variety; very different” would suggest that in order to promote diversity week the school would have to act in a diverse way themselves and this is exactly what happened. Stalls sold lanyards and badges promoting diversity and a rainbow tuck shop was organised.

The school ensured students could get to grips with gender through discussing gender related issues throughout lessons in citizenship and giving assemblies of informative value.

A lunchtime concert with the school rock band giving a sensational performance also drew attention to these issues in society and got people of all backgrounds and views involved with the week.

WELCOME TO THE WHICKHAM WAY STEVE HAIGH HEADTEACHER

Welcome to the latest edition of the Whickham Way, school newsletter. Our summer term has been a very busy and successful one. The additional revision sessions and support leading up to the exams season was embraced by students with maturity and it has been impressive to see the resilience and determination of the students as they approached their end of year examinations fully prepared. This terms newsletter is full of some of the educational and sporting achievements that the students benefit from on a regular basis at Whickham School, which is something we are very proud of. WHICKHAM SCHOOL TEACHMEET Upon seeing this headline you may be drawn to wonder what a teachmeet actually is. A teachmeet is a way for teachers to meet up and discuss strategies for helping engage and enhance student learning. The event took place in the school’s main hall with the theme of a marketplace. Faculties set up mini tables and aimed to attract fellow staff to their stall to promote their teaching strategies. The science faculty chose to use an interactive hook the duck to in fact hook other teachers and draw them into their stall with the IT department simply using balloons to make their stall look attractive. The night aimed to share different approaches of teaching and has potential for these varying ways to be incorporated into lessons. Through integrating new methods of teaching into lessons teachers hope that lessons will be in no danger of becoming tedious or stale.

Teachers volunteered to stay back through school improvement hour on Tuesday the 11th of July and put extra hours into planning and organising their stall in order to benefit the learning of students across all age groups and new practices of teaching could very likely be put into practice very soon.

CULTURAL VISIT TO BARCELONA

This years Rich Experience week saw Whickham School students setting off to some wonderful places near and far. The list of tours available this year was the most diverse yet and students from all years got the opportunity to enjoy tours to many places including Beamish, Edinburgh Zoo, Flamingo Land and also the Catalan capital Barcelona. Our Barcelona tour was originally planned for 35 students but was so oversubscribed that over 60 travelled to the historic Spanish city. We flew out of Edinburgh airport on Friday 14th July and began to explore the city almost as soon as we landed. We began with a visit to the Monjuic area of Barcelona, stopping off at the Olympic Stadium and travelling up into the hills on the famous funicular railway. There was a lot of walking involved in the trip and on one day we clocked up over 10 miles whilst taking in the sights. The tour was jam packed with activities including a visit to the birth place of famous artist Salvador Dali where students could see some of his weird and wonderful creations. After looking around the museum built in his honour we then spent a relaxing afternoon in the Spanish holiday resort of Tossa de Mar. The 5 day trip was rounded off with a full day at Spain's largest theme park, Port Aventura. The park is the countries busiest tourist attraction and boasts some of the biggest and fastest rollercoasters in Europe. All the students had a wonderful time on the trip and have already asked if we are going again during Rich Experience Week 2018!

KINGSWOOD

SPORTS DAY 2017 This year’s annual sports day was certainly one that did not disappoint, sun, sport and success are the three S’s on the lips following sports day on Thursday.

114 Year 7 and 8 students thoroughly enjoyed a two day, sun filled and action packed residential to Kingswood's Dukehouse Wood in Northumberland during Rich Experience week. The students participated in a number of activities including 3G swing, zipwire, and shelter building which developed their teamwork and problem solving skills. The behaviour of all the students was exemplary and the Kingswood instructors commended on their exemplary attitude to all of the activities. Evening activities included a campfire and a scrapheap challenge. Special mention has to go to Mr Robinson and his enthusiasm towards the Hawaiian theme night! Thank you to all of the staff and students who ensured the trip was a roaring success! Especially Miss Burton and Mr Day for organizing it.

A warm summer sports day drew new sports day records in excess with a whole host of talent shining brighter than the sun. Record breakers include; Jack Marley of year 10 smashing the high jump for his year group and Jack Wright of year 8 doing exactly the same. Jess Levvie also broke records for both the 800m and 1500m track races. The highlight of the day was unquestionably the teachers three legged race with some teachers doing particularly better than others… the initial three legged race saw Mr Szunko and Mr Alexander fly ahead to a comprehensive win over their other competitors. Their luck changed drastically however in the grand finale. The pair started with a semidecent start, nothing to shout about but they then gave the crowd of spectators plenty to shout about. Mr Alexander’s eager competitiveness got the better of him and he outpaced his partner leading to a comical fall, much to the delight of the many watching over feeling a sense of reward from the fall. The same fate dawned on Tallyn Jardine and his partner in the students mixed three legged races that healthily added fun to the programme of the day. Eagles ran out as convincing winners of the day with falcons second and kestrels sadly finishing in third place. Well done to all. Sports day was a huge success and students will certainly be happy with their morning well spent.

The evening, hosted by year 12 sports ambassadors Cameron Fergus and Abigail Tildsley in the sports hall, celebrated an avalanche of success across a diverse selection of sports and gave credit to those who made the success possible. The year 7 boys and year 10/11 girls also won the Tyne and Wear Cross Country Championships. A night that inevitably saw success celebrated and effort appreciated, and one that did Whickham School and Sports College proud.
