BLUE CARBON THE ROLE OF HEALTHY OCEANS IN BINDING CARBON
OCTOBER 2009
BLUE CARBON SINKS The world’s oceans bind an estimated 55% of all carbon in living organisms. The ocean’s blue carbon sinks – particularly mangroves, marshes and seagrasses – capture and store most of the carbon buried in marine sediments. We are losing these precious ecosystems at rates 5–10 times faster than rainforests.
