Report from the Grand Master

Esteemed Alumni, We have just completed another record-breaking rush! We have pledged 51 new guys, breaking the record we set last year of 49! Kappa Sigma continues to dominate Oklahoma City University. There are now 122 men walking the OCU campus wearing Kappa Sigma letters. OCU’s total male population is around 840, which means that one in about every seven men on this campus is a Kappa Sigma! As a small side note, Lambda Chi Alpha only had 17 men take a bid. The credit for this success can be attributed to every active and alumni brother. We have built this chapter on a foundation of excellence and the rushees recognized this fact. They saw a chapter that not only welcomed them and treated them as friends, but a chapter who has a proven record of excellence on the OCU campus, in the community, and in the

nation. I want to recognize a few alumni brothers for their direct contribution to this year’s success. Jim Bonfiglio, former president of Housing Corp and father of Nick Bonfiglio, our current GS, was one of our speakers on the first formal night of rush. He did an excellent job of conveying the importance of the chapter’s “track record of excellence.” Recent graduate Camal Pennington, a former Grand Master of Theta-Psi, as well as OCU’s Student Body President last year, was the first speaker on our final formal night. He encouraged the rushees to look past the awards our chapter has attained and realize what makes Kappa Sigma truly unique; we build leaders. Judge Spencer Kopf was our last speaker on the final formal night, as he has been for many years now. It was an honor, as it has always been, to have him be the last speaker and to represent the culmination of all our hard work. Judge Kopf is a living testament to the fact that Kappa Sigma “is not for a day, or an hour, or a college-term only, but for life.” His message to the rushees reflected that living truth. I would also like to thank all of the alumni that stopped by the house throughout rush week. It was great to see all of you guys again, and it was important for the rushees to see that the alumni are still invested in the house. I would also like to congratulate alumni Darryl Plunkett and Gary Maxey whose sons Ryan and Morgan are now pledges of Theta-Psi. Our beloved house at 2412 N. Virginia is becoming a little small with 71 active brothers and 51 pledges. We are having all of our chapter and pledge meetings in the Meinders School of Business, which really detracts from the ritual and the bond that we all share in the basement. As a result, a small group of actives including myself have begun to meet with the university about being the first house to begin construction on Greek Row. The university has had the blueprints drawn for a while now and have continued to promise us a new house for the last couple of years, but every year we get told that a new house is still two years away. We have now gone to the university saying that we cannot wait any longer. Our chapter is not going to get any smaller, and if we continue on the pace we’ve been on for the last few years, the chapter could potentially have 200 active brothers by 2012. The economy is holding the university back, and we told them that our chapter is not only willing, but also eager to raise the money to make this happen. We are still in the planning stages at this point, but we have the President of the University behind us and we have all of the momentum we need to make this happen. We will be having a meeting soon with university officials and our alumni volunteers to establish a clear picture of this project. I am simply asking you to begin talking to each other, to start exploring your connections with contractors or financiers, to start generating excitement about the fact that Kappa Sigma can be the first house on Greek Row, and to lead the charge for Greek Life on OCU’s campus as we have done since 1967. We will be in touch soon with our action plan of how we are going to make this happen, but I can say confidently that this will happen. We are without a doubt the best fraternity on this campus, we are the best chapter in the state, we are ranked in the top six chapters of Kappa Sigma in North America, and without question we have the best

alumni in the world. I think it’s time that we start thinking about having one of the greatest fraternity houses in the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. AEKDB Ethan Davis Grand Master-Theta Psi “Not for a day, or an hour, or a college-term only, but for life.”

In Loving Memory of Brother Carlos Guevara We would liken to express our sincere condolences to the family of Carlos Guevara and to the brothers that knew him. Carlos was the definition of what it means to be a brother and a man worthy of the Star and Crescent. We, the active brothers, have motioned in meaning to donate our proceeds from our fundraising events every Friday at Urban Market in Oklahoma City to the scholarship fund for Carlos’s children. There is also a fundraising effort being made by alumni to help Carlos’s family pay for the funeral. If you would like to get involved in either fundraising effort please call Jason Underhill at (405) 408-0124 for more information. To those of you already involved if there is anything else we can do as actives to help please let us know. A.E.K.D.B
