Third Quarter 2015 Guatemalan Evangelical Ministries Stove Project by Margarita Achalzo, Guatemalan Resident
Solution: The Chapina Stove
Mission Director (with a little editing help from Pat)

The Chapina stove, as shown above, is easy to assemble and is portable, as the concrete is prefabricated and cured before delivery. The women quickly learn how to use them, and within a short time can be cooking tortillas and boiling beans without the danger of them and/or their family members getting sick or having their lungs contaminated.
Above is the typical kitchen and stove for many villages and poor areas in Guatemala, including Parramos. Imagine cooking all your meals over an open fire in a small room with little or no ventilation, continually inhaling dangerous smoke often with your child beside you breathing that same toxic smoke. Mayan women cook an average of six hours a day, many over an open fire built on the floor in their small huts. Smoky, hot and dangerous for them and their families, such fires also use a lot of wood. And often a family will sleep in the same room as the open fire to stay warm during cold months (in the Guatemalan mountains the air can be as cold as 45 degrees at night).
We heard about these stoves when a new organization recently moved into the village selling them. I (Margarita) shared information about them with two wonderful ladies, who are also sponsoring families, who often come on a missionary trip to assist G.E.M. each July. When they were at our mission this July we stopped by the store, they looked at the stoves, and bought one for a family right away. Then not long after that I received a call from Mrs. Carol Dwyer with this great news, “I have a donation from friends!” So we came up with the idea to donate stoves to those families who cook on open fires.
Toxic emissions from these fires cause low birth weights and pneumonia in young children, as well as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema, cardiovascular disease, lung cancer, cataracts, and other health problems in adults. Half of all deaths for those younger than five years who die from acute lower respiratory 1
And here’s an interesting “coincidence.” At this same time Bill and Pat, unaware of the decisions made about the stoves, received a call from one of G.E.M.’s sponsors in Washington state. This couple “just happened” to be concerned about the health risks associated with the smoke created by cooking over an open fire! “We’d like to buy a stove for our sponsored family,” they said. The very next day Bill and Pat received an email from me (Margarita) telling them about the “stove project,” which included the same photo of a stove shown on page 1 of this communiqué. So in order to give them information about the stove, Bill and Pat forwarded them the email from me. Soon after they joyfully reported that the young girl in the photo standing next to the stove “just happened” to be their sponsored child, Estefanya! Now more wonderful sponsors and friends have been added to the list of donors of the “Stove Project” by donating the $146 needed to pay for a stove. So God used this one call from Carol Dwyer to start an immense blessing for many families here in Parramos! We send a BIG THANK YOU to all of you that have been sending your donations for stoves!!
Old house and kitchen
Guatemalan Resident Mission Director
But again very strongly she asked me, “Aren’t the Americanos coming this year?” She was kind of surprised because she knew that they came each year in July to build houses. I said yes, they are coming but to do other work for the mission. But she insisted and told me, “I will continue praying harder and I will come back next week for an answer.”
This (see photo in next column) was the house and kitchen of Sara Ochoa, where she lived with her husband and two children. Mrs. Ochoa had heard of the houses the mission was building. For two and half years Mrs. Ochoa came to the mission door requesting us that she really needed a house. This year her children and she were getting sick with pneumonia. The roof had a lot of holes and when it rained the water came right on their beds because in her small house there was no space to move the beds around. After I heard about her situation it was very hard for me to let her know that there was no plan to build a house this year. I had already received a call from Pastor Matt Dollhausen that they were not going to build houses this year.
One day before that week was up I received a call from Pastor Matt Dollhousen and all I remember from his call was “Hi, Margarita; how are you?” and then the next sentence was, “One house in Parramos, we are going to build one house.” So I called Mrs. Sara Ochoa and I told her, “I have an answer for you. The Lord answered your prayer. Get ready because the team is coming to build a house for you and your family.” So in the same week our Lord provided for a new home for this family and a new stove also! (Side note from Doug): You cannot imagine the joy this woman felt as she was handed the keys to her new house and also was shown how to operate her new stove. What a blessing for the members of the mission team to

supper. Also it will be useful for weddings, birthdays, or Bible studies with groups of men, ladies, teenagers, or children. (A side note from Doug): Originally Kay and I ordered the 10 x 20 foot concrete slab to set a modified shipping container, converted into an office, upon. However difficulties with shipping prevented the container from reaching Guatemala, so Margarita came up with the good idea to put a gazebo on the slab).

They built the gazebo with much love and using their many abilities. It is painted a nice color and the camp looks more beautiful now. Now when visitors coming to the camp are impressed with the new look that the gazebo gives to our facility. They also made three nice tables so guests can have a delicious breakfast, lunch, or

happened this year? In July Eva’s dream came true. Now we have a new counter with new supplies! We are proud to have a kitchen with a new counter, varnished so perfectly, and made by Pastor Matt and his group. We now have three sinks with new faucets instead of the old sinks that were worn out, as well as an extended area for food preparation.

The New Kitchen In May, June and July of this year we had the opportunity to have sponsors and friends at the mission’s camp, doing different work for the mission, that we could not afford to do it without the help of our wonderful sponsors and friends like all of you. We want to take this opportunity to thank you for all the work you came to do here at the mission. For those that have not yet come, thank you for your daily support and prayers that keep us going. Remember we are your hands and feet here in Guatemala but we would like for you to join us some day and be a part of one of the teams that comes on the mission’s trips. You are welcome to come and to experience the work we are doing for the Glory of our God at any time. May God bless you! We are very thankful to God.
