Go Green, go state! CSU is leading the way into the future.

46 Colorado State MEN’S BASKETBALL 2008-09

hen it comes to its athletic programs, Colorado State University’s mission is twofold: build great character and compete for championships. CSU has committed more than $27 million to build new facilities to enhance the academic and competitive experience for its studentathletes as they strive for greatness.

W

CSU’s eight colleges provide access to more than 150 programs, offering worldclass degree opportunities in social and natural sciences, math, technology, engineering, business, the arts, and humanities. It’s a hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves educational experience that is setting the pace nationally and internationally in undergraduate education.

Athletics is an important aspect of the CSU experience, but there is much more to embrace. CSU welcomes students from all 50 states and more than 85 countries, making Fort Collins a college town with a worldly atmosphere. It is a unique experience – the rare opportunity to learn and grow in a friendly environment where global challenges are being met daily.

Not only does CSU provide an outstanding staff of academic support professionals, it also offers student-athletes unique educational opportunities such as its 1,200-acre Pingree Park Campus, a mountain paradise 9,000 feet above sea level. CSU students and faculty form an educational partnership, working together both in the classroom and in the field. The student to faculty ratio is 17 to 1.

CSU strongly believes in experiential learning, giving students hands-on experience in the field.

Colorado State University coaches believe building a great team is really about building great people – and preparing them for success in life, as well as in athletics. The University and the Board of Governors of the CSU System have made a bold commitment to the success of CSU athletics, breaking ground this summer on two significant buildings. The state-of-the-art indoor practice facility will house a 70-yard synthetic turf field, a four-lane running track, basketball courts, and volleyball courts. The academic and training center will include an expanded weight room and the two-story Anderson Academic Center. Private supporters who believe in our program and its future have made these projects possible.

Leading the way s Approximately 600 students per year participate in study-abroad programs. s CSU’s student body is very active, with 25 percent participating in intramural sports programs.

These additions will elevate Colorado State athletics to new heights while assuring our studentathletes have the opportunity of a world-class education. Ranked in the top tier of American research universities, CSU is increasingly recognized as a university where faculty and students collaborate in the classroom to tap their highest potential and develop innovative, practical solutions to the greatest global challenges facing our planet. In the case of CSU athletics, we are building a successful program that will graduate athletes, win championships, and keep Colorado State athletics in the national spotlight. Go Rams!

Director of Athletics Paul Kowalczyk Colorado State Director of Athletics Paul Kowalczyk last spring stood behind a podium in the Coors Auditorium inside the McGraw Athletic Center, announcing plans for the institution's most comprehensive athletics facilities initiative in more than four decades. Kowalczyk's enthusiasm brimmed over as the athletics program stood on the verge of entering one of the most exciting eras in school history. University officials have committed to an initiative that will place CSU's athletics facilities among the finest in the nation. The new facilities will make CSU competitive nationally and enhance the institution's image across a broad spectrum. "There has never been a better time to be a Ram!", Kowalczyk proclaimed as he made the announcement regarding the new facilities, facing a contingent of fans, donors, alumni, and members of the media. "These buildings show that Colorado State is unmistakably serious about achieving its stretch goals," Kowalczyk said. "Combined with the recent renovations at our football stadium, this puts us where we need to be in terms of offering quality, state-of-the-art facilities to our coaches and student-athletes, those who are here now and those who are thinking about coming here." Included in the initiative are an indoor practice facility, to be located north of the Student Recreation Center, and a new Academic and Training Center located south of the McGraw Athletic Center. The facilities initiative also reflects Kowalczyk's commitment to excellence throughout the program. "Average is simply not good enough," he said. "We must continually find ways to improve every aspect of our program while meeting the needs of our student-athletes and providing resources for our coaches --

not just to compete, but to win, and do it while serving the university, the community, and the region." Those resources will soon include the aforementioned facilities which will create much needed practice space and serve as a primary recruiting tool. The indoor practice facility will include a 70-yard synthetic turf football field, as well as regulation-size basketball and volleyball courts. "The indoor practice facility will not only provide our team the opportunity to practice in a state-of-the-art facility, but will enhance our ability to attract the best student-athletes to CSU," Kowalczyk said. The Academic and Training Center will support the department's mission toward studentathletes. The facility will contain a state-of-theart weight room as well as an academic center featuring a computer lab, private tutorial rooms and large study areas. "The Academic and Training Center will allow our student-athletes to meet their potential both academically and athletically," Kowalczyk said. "A new facility will reflect the support provided by the university and our supporters for success." Soon after Kowalczyk's arrival in Fort Collins, he worked closely with the Board of Governors of the Colorado State University System and President Larry Penley to set in place early a set of "stretch goals." The new facilities place CSU's program on a clear course to attain those goals under Kowalczyk's leadership. "The support of Dr. Penley and the board, who were there every step of the way, was critical," Kowalczyk said. "We have leadership on this campus that not only recognizes the importance of investing in athletics, but also what a successful athletics department can do for the university." Colorado State's stretch goals include: t "DIJFWFB/PSBOLJOHJOUIF%JSFDtor's Cup, a ranking system that reflects overall program success; t "OOVBM#PXM$IBNQJPOTIJQ4FSJFT inclusion; t /$""NFOhTBOEXPNFOhTCBTLFUCBMM tournament participation.
