This quick guide is intended to provide basic information regarding NCAA rules that apply to boosters, alumni, fans, and friends of Westminster College. This guide does not include all NCAA rules and should not be relied upon exclusively. It is a tool to help you avoid an inadvertent violation of NCAA legislation. If you have questions concerning NCAA rules please contact the Athletics Compliance Office.

FAQS once an individual has been identified as a booster, how long does he or she retain that status?

Forever.

is the institution responsible for the acts of boosters and booster support groups?

Yes. Boosters are governed by the same NCAA rules and regulations as those placed upon all institutional staff members. is it permissible for a booster to transport, pay or arrange for the payments of transportation costs

incurred by relatives or friends of a prospective student-athlete to visit the campus or elsewhere?

No.

i’ve got some extra tickets to the utah jazz game, can i give them to a student-athlete?

No. Tickets, cash, loans, discounted services, etc. are considered extra benefits and cannot be provided to student-athletes or prospects by boosters.

is it permissible for a booster to provide summer employment to a student-athlete?

Yes. Compensation must be paid only for work actually performed and at a rate commensurate with the going rate in that locality for similar services. is it permissible for a booster to provide gifts or

awards to a student-athlete for his or her academic performance?

No. All awards must conform to the NCAA awards legislation and must be approved by the institution. is it permissible for a booster to contact a prospect via social media and encourage them to attend westminster college?

No. Normal interaction with your friends and peers is allowed, however all recruiting should be left to the athletic coaches at Westminster College. how do i report a possible ncaa violation?

IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS representative of westminster college’s athletics interests (i.e. booster) is anyone who:

• Is now, or has previously been, a member of any organization promoting the institution’s intercollegiate athletics program. • Has financially contributed to Westminster College Athletics at any time. • Has assisted or been asked to assist in the recruitment of a prospective student-athlete.

• Any solicitation of a prospect or a member of a prospect’s family for the purposes of securing the prospect’s enrollment and ultimate participation in Westminster College athletics. extra benefit

• Any benefit or special arrangement provided by an institutional employee or a representative of athletics interest of the institution to a student-athlete or the student-athlete’s friend or relative that is not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation.

• Has assisted in providing benefits to an enrolled student-athlete or his/her family.

RULES YOU SHOULD KNOW

• A student-athlete is a student whose enrollment at Westminster College was solicited by a member of the athletics staff or representative of athletics interests with a view toward the student’s ultimate participation in the Westminster College athletics program.

• Notify our coaches about prospects in your area that may be strong additions to our teams. • Attend high school or two-year college athletic contests or other events where prospects may compete; however, you may not contact the prospect or the prospect’s relatives. • Continue existing friendships with families of prospects, but you may not attempt to recruit the prospect. • Invite a student-athlete into your home for an occasional meal, but please coordinate such activity with the Athletics Compliance Office.

• Provide summer employment for enrolled student-athletes.

Important: Once a person is identified as a “Representative of Athletics Interests” (booster), the person retains that identity forever. Once a booster, always a booster.

•The prospect remains as such until he or she reports for practice or attends the first day of classes for a regular term (Fall or Spring) at Westminster College.

• Contacting a prospect in person off-campus • Writing or telephoning a prospect or a member of the prospect’s family • Making arrangements for a prospect or a student-athlete (including family and friends) to receive money or financial aid of any kind • Providing transportation for a prospect or a student-athlete (including family and friends) to visit our campus • Providing free tickets (or tickets at a reduced cost) for a prospect or a student-athlete (including family and friends) to attend an athletic event • Entertaining high school, prep school, or community college coaches

student-athlete employment:

• The student-athlete may only be compensated for work actually performed. • The student-athlete must be compensated at the “going rate” for the work performed. • The student-athlete may not be hired based on his or her athletic ability. • The student-athlete and their supervisor must complete the Student-Athlete Employment Form.

& commercial activities for student-athletes: promotional

• All charitable, educational, and nonprofit promotional activities involving student-athletes must have prior approval from the athletic director. • Student-athletes are not permitted to be involved in the advertisement, recommendation, or promotion of sales or use of a commercial product or service of any kind.
