Threats to Unbelief

Larry & Marletta Hemphill International Student Ministry at the University of Colorado in Boulder Letter # 136 December, 2016

Threats to Unbelief Wei showed up last spring and joined our Bible discussion group. He was eager to learn and asked lots of questions. Some of his questions were just off-thewall intellectual distractions. As time passed his questions became more genuine. He began to ask about evidence for the existence of God, proof that Jesus was more than a mere man, and how a person becomes a Christian. We always shared appropriate Bible passages to answer his questions. The Word of God was doing its work. He eventually told us that his mother back home had become a Christian and she was praying that he would become a Christian too. After several months of Bible study and a mother’s unceasing prayers, Wei finally trusted Christ in September and was baptized November 20. Never underestimate the power of God’s Word and the prayers of a mother. With the Christmas season fast approaching, our minds are on presents. At this time of year we are often so preoccupied with both the giving and receiving of Christmas presents that we neglect to focus on the Christmas presence of Immanuel, God with us, the first and greatest Christmas present ever given. The next big event is our annual International Student Christmas Party. The house is decorated and looks festive. There will be food, singing, a reading of the Christmas story from the Gospels, and a lively discussion about the birth of Jesus. It seems the students always want to know why the birth of a Jewish baby boy 2000 years ago should be so important to us today. Many of those attending are students who are not yet believers. The house will be packed with curious minds, and we love answering their questions. What a great way to end 2016! Help keep the Christmas story going all year long. We cannot do this ministry without help. We are grateful for all the prayers and financial gifts that help make spiritually transformed lives possible. Additional support is needed to keep this ministry going. Through prayer and financial support, you can invest a piece of your life in what God is doing here. Hemphill Family 2016 We have much to be grateful for—a growing family, good health, and provision for our needs. Larry’s Bianchi bicycle has turned over 70,000 miles. (We know you’ve all been waiting for this stat.) He continues preaching about once a month at the Chinese church, as well as ministering to students. He still loves reading; makes visits to the library almost weekly. His mother passed away at the age of 91 in March. His dad, with his frailties at the age of 93, is missing her. Marletta is still seeing her physical therapist once a month. Her spine has straightened some, enabling her to be increasingly productive. She is working through the editing process on her family history book after taking a hiatus while her six sisters took turns reviewing it. During her break from it, she wrote some other material—short articles and poetry—and even self-published a poetry book on Israel following a trip to the Holy Land in the spring of 2015. Jessica & Jeremy went to the Philippines in March to pick up their 2-year-old adopted son, Alex, who just turned 3 in November. He has brought much joy to all with his sweet spirit. Jessica continues to build her Shaklee business, and is doing quite well. Jeremy has been working for three years with HomeAway—a vacation homes company—as a Software Engineer. Though they were unable to take an annual mission trip with their church, they continue to support their passion for missions. Jessica is doing a fundraiser for human trafficking this month. Erica & Rudy have two sons, Skylar-7½ and Cole-3 years—two very busy boys, who keep Grandma & Grandpa hopping every Sunday and their parents the rest of the time. Erica has been working as a prep chef at a restaurant in downtown Denver for more than 3 years. Rudy has been working numerous jobs and projects in remodeling, building and making things for clients as well as his own family. This artistic, creative whirlwind never ceases to amaze. They have recently purchased land in the mountains they hope to develop into a commercial business. Stay tuned. Daniel has done seasonal work the past two years with Lafayette Parks and Recreation. He took a trip to Japan for a 2-month home-stay with a Japanese family in the spring of this year to study the language and culture. He enjoyed the food and sightseeing experiences while there. A visit to a local church informed him regarding the small percentage of Christians in that country. He felt the Kumamoto earthquake 50 miles away from his location. He is presently in the process of applying for a job with the US Postal service as his seasonal job is ending. A Blessed Christmas and New Year to all, The Hemphills Larry & Marletta Hemphill
