FREE TO BOAST

July 10, 2016 | Ron Thompson “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1 ESV

 What Is My Core Identity? “For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. And as for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. From now on let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.” Galatians 6:15-17 ESV

I Will Boast In Divine Approval “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.” Galatians 6:18 ESV

“See with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh who would force you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who are circumcised do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may boast in your flesh. But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. And as for all who walk by this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. From now on let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.” Galatians 6:11-18 ESV “See with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand.” Galatians 6:11 ESV

LESSON AIM: The aim of this lesson is to understand that grace is foundational to our Christian faith.

5. In a recent poll, 57% of evangelical Christians agreed with the statement “Many religions can lead to eternal life.” This sounds sophisticated and tolerant. Read 1 Corinthians 1:18. We all know that 2+2=4. This statement is objectively true, regardless of opinion. If Christianity is objectively true, the poll statement is actually false and misleading. How should Christians counter that thinking? DIGGING DEEPER: We’ve covered many of the key concepts that are foundational to Christianity in this series: our need for grace; grace vs. legalism & license; our freedom in grace; our adoption by grace; faith working through love; fruits of the Spirit; reaping what we sow; and boasting only in Jesus. How has this series helped you develop a clearer picture of God?

KEY VERSE: “Far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ…” Galatians 6:14a ESV

Most of us think of ourselves as good people. But the message of the cross is that we have all rebelled against the God who made us. We need a redeemer. Being a good person isn’t enough to save you. How could you explain this to a non-believer without offending them?

1. On Sunday, we learned we are to only boast in Jesus. How did this challenge you?

2. Boasting isn’t always verbal. Read Galatians 6:12. Some older translations refer to “boasting in the flesh” in this verse. Compare that verse to Matthew 6:2, 6:5 and 6:16. Pride and self-righteousness are always a temptation. What are ways we boast in the flesh?

A good summary of Galatians might be: Don’t depend on your own righteousness to get to Heaven. Instead, accept God’s offer of free salvation in Jesus and rest in that. Then work it out in your life as “faith expressing itself in love.” Let’s close with Revelation 3:20 – a compelling picture of God, who wants to know us.

3. In Galatians 6:14, Paul said we are to boast only in the cross. This is the opposite of pride, which comes so naturally to us. It is an entirely new way to think and to live. How does the phrase “boasting in the cross” show that Christianity is a matter of inward change, not external observance? 4. Read Galatians 5:11 and 6:12. Without a biblical worldview, the highest virtue in our culture is tolerance. Why does the need for a redeemer offend people?
