EVENT  HISTORY:

This  is  the  second  year  for  the  event  which  has  been  designed  to  showcase  and  celebrate   women’s  basketball  at  all  levels.

On  December  28th  –  30th,  2013,  8  top  CIS  (Canadian  Interuniversity  Sport)  women’s  basketball   teams  will  compete  at  Saint  Mary’s  University  in  Halifax.    We  hope  to  grow  the  event  to  be  the   premier  competitive  CIS  Holiday  tournament  experience  for  women’s  teams  from  all  over  the   country.

This  event  provides  young  female  basketball  players  –  from  minor  basketball  to  high  school  –  a   platform  to  dream  and  set  goals  for  themselves  which  will  benefit  them  in  the  classroom  and  on   the  basketball  court.

This  year  we  are  very  fortunate  to  welcome  several  new  sponsors  -‐  including  Bell  Aliant,  Subway,   and  Coca-‐Cola  -‐  in  addition  to  our  existing  major  partners  which  have  allowed  us  to  build  even   more  momentum  for  this  event.    We  have  attracted  five  schools  from  outside  the  AUS.    New   participants  in  2013  include:  Brock  (OUA),  McMaster  (OUA),  Victoria  (Canada  West),  and   Western  (OUA).

ORGANIZATION  HISTORY:  The  Thunder  Selects  are  a  private  not-‐for-‐profit  program,  which  originated  in  Halifax  in  1999,   and  has  continued  to  provide  girls  21  years  of  age  and  younger  with  a  very  competitive,  fun,   and  memorable  experience.  Thunder  Selects  Basketball  is  committed  to  maintaining  the  highest   standards  in  all  of  our  programs  and  this  event  will  be  no  exception.    The  Thunder  Selects   coaching  staff,  alumni,  current  athletes,  friends,  and  parents  continue  to  maintain  a  strong   presence  in  the  community  and  are  increasingly  passionate  about  Thunder  Selects  Basketball   and  the  benefits  that  it  has  to  offer.

PARTICIPATING  TEAMS:   Acadia,  Brock  (OUA),  Dalhousie,  Manitoba  (Canada  West),  McMaster  (OUA),  Saint  Mary’s,   Victoria  (Canada  West),  and  Western  (OUA).

FROM  THE  ORGANIZER:   “I  am  very  proud  and  excited  to  have  the  opportunity  to  host  an  event  which  will  bring  CIS   women’s  basketball  to  Halifax  over  the  Holidays.    I  am  truly  grateful  to  the  8  teams  who  trusted   us  with  their  Holiday  basketball  plans  and  for  the  generous  support  that  we  have  received  from   sponsors  and  supporters.    We  look  forward  to  three  days  of  exciting  basketball  when  the   tournament  tips  off  on  December  28  and  continued  growth  and  success  for  many  years.”  –   Brandon  Rafuse

FROM  THE  COACHES:

“We  are  very  excited  to  be  invited  to  the  Thunder  Selects  Holiday  Classic.  This  tournament  was  a   no  brainer  in  our  schedule  because  we  knew  it  was  going  to  be  an  A1  event.  Everything  that   Brandon  Rafuse  and  the  Thunder  Selects  do  is  about  excellence.  They  do  such  a  good  job   developing  basketball  in  the  Maritimes  and  we  expect  this  event  to  be  no  different.  The  depth  of   teams  we  have  at  this  tournament  is  tremendous.  What  other  tournament  can  boast  that  they   have  teams  that  span  from  coast  to  coast?  This  is  truly  a  Canadian  tournament  where  some  of   Canada’s  very  best  teams  will  be  looking  to  test  each  other  over  the  holidays.  We  are  looking   forward  to  exposing  our  players  to  a  different  part  of  the  country,  from  the  differences  in  culture   to  the  difference  in  the  style  of  play  from  all  across  Canada.”  –  Brian  Cheng,  Head  Coach,   Western  University

"The  Dal  Tigers  thoroughly  enjoyed  last  year’s  Thunder  Selects  Holiday  Classic!    It  was  an   extremely  well  run  tournament  fielding  good  competition,  first  class  people,  and  atmosphere  all   weekend  and  in  an  ideal  location.    We're  very  excited  to  return  to  this  season's  Holiday  Classic."   –  Anna  Stammberger,  Head  Coach,  Dalhousie  University

“The  Holiday  Classic  was  a  very  well-‐run  tournament  in  2012.    I’ve  received  nothing  but  positive   feedback.    It  is  a  first  class  event  which  this  year  bring  together  one  of  the  strongest  8  team  fields   in  the  country.”  –  Scott  Munro,  Head  Coach,  Saint  Mary’s  University
