Thursday 23rd July 2015 Dear Parents and Guardians, Next week St Joseph’s joins with all Catholic schools in Queensland to celebrate Catholic Education Week. It is a time to stop and reflect on the proud history of Catholic Education in this state and the importance and relevance of Catholic schools today in the life of families and communities across Queensland. As part of the week long celebration, schools are invited to nominate members of our school community for a Spirit of Catholic Education Award. This award showcased the individuals who are working in our schools, going above and beyond their roles to enrich school communities. I have much pleasure in announcing that Jan Oram is the St Joseph’s recipient of this year’s Spirit of Catholic Education Award. Jan has been an outstanding teacher and educator during her time at St Joseph’s. As well as her role as classroom teacher, Jan has taken on the responsibility of leading and supporting the teachers in the application and embedding the Australian Curriculum into our teaching and learning practices. Jan will receive her award from our Director Dr Cathy Day on Monday. Congratulations Jan. NAIDCOC Assembly A reminder that the combined, St Joseph’s and St Patrick’s, NAIDOC assembly will be held in the St Patrick’s College undercover area at the early time of 10.05am. Parents and family members wishing to attend are asked to enter St Patrick’s from their Oxley Street Entrance, and they will be escorted to the assembly area by St Patrick’s students. St Joseph’s Athletics Carnival Our athletics carnival will be held next Tuesday 28th July. Parents are reminded to return their child’s permission note that was sent home with the children last Tuesday and emailed out. Next Monday 27th July, our annual High Jump event will take place for students 10yo—12yo. Those students are asked to wear their St Joseph’s sports uniform. Parents are welcome to attend.. Reminders

We talk about how the Holy Spirit being like the wind, as we know it is there but we can’t see it, however we can see it in the trees when the wind blows. We also talk about the fruits of the Holy Spirit (love, joy, faithfulness, kindness, goodness, self-control, gentleness, peace and patience), that we have them in us all, but some are growing better than others, so how can we encourage the others to grow within us? Please remember in your prayers: In your prayers can you please remember the following people: Keir Family Jenny Roberts family Many blessings for the week ahead,

Tuckshop News A big thank you to our wonderful parents who made some lovely NAIDOC week bakes for us. The lemon myrtle biscuits and wattle seed shortbread were absolutely wonderful! As most of you are aware , the St Joeys sports carnival is on Tuesday the 28th and I am moving the tuck shop to the red track for the day. I will have very basic stock that will include Party pies, cold drinks, zooper doopers, snack foods, popcorn and hopefully cupcakes from some wonderful volunteer baking parents! It is a limited menu and parents are asked to send lunch with their children on the day. It is simply snack foods. Tea and coffee will also be available for parents to purchase too. Could anyone wishing to donate cupcakes bring them to the sports ground on the day. Any donations are happily accepted and appreciated. This Friday we have a special guest helper at the tuckshop. He will be serving from 1pm(second lunch). This will be the start of Canteen Week celebrations. “He” will be helping sell assorted bakes/slices for 50 cents. Canteen week menu is only available over the counter at first break. You can make an order on a brown paper bag to ensure you do not miss out. The menu is as follows:
Monday : Hash browns -$1.00 each Tuesday: At Sport reserve Wednesday: Banana bread -$1.00 a slice Thursday: Apple crumble-$1.00 each Friday: Spring rolls - 50 cents each This is a special treat week to celebrate workers and volunteers who help make the tuck shop run successfully. Thanks Miss Cathy
Townsville Primary School Sport News. Congratulations to Jeremy Morton, Cody Sadler, Daniel Franettovich, Jaxen Yow, Darcy Keir, Kye Johnston and Aidan Dohnalek on their selection yesterday in the Townsville Primary Schools Rugby Union team. They now progress to a Northern Trials day on Sunday 2nd August, where a North Queensland team will be selected. We congratulate them and wish them well in their Rugby journeys. Kai Negri deserves special mention for representing North Queensland at the Queensland Primary Schools Cross Country Championships, held on the Gold Coast last week. Kai acquitted himself with distinction at this prestigious event. He has been rewarded for a tireless effort in chasing his goals.

Year 5OC Camp Gumburu 2015 What a great way to start Term 3! 5OC enjoyed three days in our beautiful TCEO environmental centre at Paluma. We were able to soak up the rainforest atmosphere and the company of our class friends. Highlights were the walks to Cloudy Creek, singing and storytelling around the campfire, the sensory trail where we were blindfolded and had to rely on our buddy to get us through, looking for creek critters on the H-Trail and playing at the Town Common. We all felt very thankful to have the chance to be in Antarctica ( oops, we mean Paluma – we were very cold!!!) as we got to wear all our clothes at one time and had very healthy appetites to enjoy the wonderful camp food. Thanks to all year 5 for being happy, enthusiastic and kind to their friends!
