Thursday 26th February 2015 Dear Parents, Guardians and Children, Our annual St Joseph’s Swimming Carnival will be held tomorrow at nearby Tobruk Pool. This is such a wonderful school event. Over the years I have been so impressed with how the children support each other regardless of what house they belong to. This carnival is all about friendly competition and having fun together as a school community. I look forward to the day and hope to see many parents and family members. Carnival Reminders Students are asked to arrive at school as normal and will depart school in house teams after roll marking. Students will walk to the pool with class teachers (and parent helpers) for a 9.00am start. The carnival will conclude by approximately 12.00 pm and children may be collected by parents at Tobruk or return to St Joseph's to be supervised until 2.50pm. Students are asked not to bring coloured spray or streamers to the carnival. Parents are invited to attend our carnival and interested parents may like to join in the parents/teachers/students relay. Prep—Year 2 Water Fun Day The children in Prep to Year 2 (those Year 2 children not competing at the carnival), will have their own fun at our Strand Water Park. Parents of children in Prep to Year 2 are welcome to come along and join in the activities. Water Park Reminders Tomorrow, while the year 2-6 are at Tobruk Pool, the Prep—2 children will be going to the Water Park. Prep L and Year 2 (students not going to the carnival) from 10.00am —10.40am. Prep R and Year 1 students from 10.40am —11.20. All students must wear sunsafe swimming clothing with easy to slip on shoes to walk to and from the waterpark (but must have closed in shoes for school). They are to wear their full school uniform before and after their waterpark visit. Parents are asked to help with supervision with both walking to and while at the waterpark. Elected School Leaders Congratulations to the following students who were voted as our representative school leaders in 2015. School Captains ~ Sarah Mosch & Daniel Franettovich House Captains ~ Abby Collison & Kai Negri (Faulkner), Samara James & Jeremy Morton (Benjamin), Chloe Dickinson & Darcy Keir (Ryan) SRC~Isaac Pyers & Harper Weekers Thank you to all students who nominated for these positions. All Year 6 students have an equal role as student leaders.

[email protected] [email protected] Dear Parent/Caregiver, In 2015, your child will be eligible to participate in the Mary Help of Christians Parish Sacramental program. In the Diocese of Townsville, and the Parish of Mary Help of Christians, we offer this to children in grade 4 or above. The Sacraments that the children will be partaking in are Reconciliation, and the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist. We take pleasure in inviting your child to take part in our Program. As a compulsory part of the program we ask a Parent or Caregiver to attend an enrolment session. In order for your child to take part in the Sacramental program, you will need to have attended one of the sessions provided. You will note we have offered a variety of session times to accommodate everyone. If none of these times are suitable please contact Jacqui (A.P.R.E. at St Joseph’s North Ward) or Seana Mokrzecki (Sacramental coordinator for the Mary Help of Christians Parish). Failure to attend the session will mean your child will not be a part of our program for 2015. We look forward to working with you and your child toward their fuller participation into their Catholic faith within the Mary Help of Christians Parish. Yours in faith Seana Mokrzecki

Teaching and Learning @SJS Many parents at our recent information night expressed interest in learning a little more about curriculum matters at St Joseph’s. We will begin a regular communication through our newsletter and welcome any questions you would like us to address. Last Thursday and Friday, SJS hosted Chris Killey, director of educational consultancy, Learning
Made Easier and an expert in teaching spelling and grammar strategies. Chris worked with each year level using songs, games and engaging activities to cover Alphabet Knowledge-the 26 letters and 45 sounds, Grammar Magic – her exciting colour-coded approach to teaching grammar and Spelling Magic- strategies for learning 29 spelling rules and how they apply to 83% of ALL words. She also ran a Professional Development session for all SJS staff covering “100 strategies all students should know”. This is to support “Word Study” – the teaching approach to spelling and vocabularly development that we are focussing on across our year levels.
Why "WORD STUDY" instead of "TRADITIONAL" spelling programs? Research clearly indicates that memorisation of lists of "spelling words" does not promote the development of spelling skills. In the past, relying on the traditional approach of “everyone gets the same weekly words and test on Friday”, many students were unable to trasfer their knowledge to their writing! Memorising a weekly list does not necessarily mean that your child is a good speller. By using Word Study strategies in our classrooms, we can more effectively look for what patterns students use but confuse, look for inconsistencies in students’ spelling, build from what students know, contrast something known with new learning and teach children to think and talk about language. Each week our classrooms will have a spelling/ grammar focus strategy.
Next Week Spelling Focus: Vowels and Consonants. Did you know? There is a vowel in every syllable. Ask your child about: V Power!! Grammar Focus: Action Verbs There must be a verb in every sentence. Did you know? A helpful way to see if a word is a verb is if you can put “I will… Yesterday I… I have…..” in front of the word! one!
You can have fun in the car on the way to school with this
