Thursday 31st July 2014 Dear Parents, Guardians and Children, This morning I was fortunate to spend some time at the Townsville Challenge Games. Three of our students, Lola Hamilton, Jack Whelan and Brian Wiegmann represented St Joseph’s over the two days. A large number of primary and secondary students participated from Townville Schools and from schools as far as Weipa, Innisfail, Mackay and Mount Isa. Congratulations to our students and thank you to their parents and staff for supporting them.
Confirmation The children will be confirmed on Tuesday 5th August in our church. The children and their families are asked to dress smartly for the occasion. Please bring a plate to share at supper after ceremony.
Catholic Education Week This week is Catholic Education Week and the Sacramental Also great to see Ignatius Park College students volunteering children got to celebrate it by attending Mass at the Cathedral their time to assist with the carnival. Well done boys. with all the other Catholic Schools. The Year 4 and 5 children went to Mass on Tuesday and celebrated it. But as a school we Catholic Education Week are asking everyone to celebrate Catholic Education Week by One of the themes of Catholic Education Week is for everyone to do a random act of kindness. This is a passage performing a random act of kindness. I can’t wait to hear how from our Monday morning staff prayer. I think it capture children made others feel special through their act of kindness. what Random Acts of Kindness is all about. Please share your story if you have one! In the bible we see all ways in which Jesus show kindness. Of course Jesus is not random, his deliberate kindness is an integral part of his ministry here on earth. He spoke kindly to Spotto the woman at the well when the rest of the world was ignoring Ruby Moore, Savahna Lee, Helena Scobie and Zara Dalton: her. He was kind to the lepers while others shunned them. He At Youth Mass I called on these girls at very late notice to read, washed the disciples feet when they should have been kneeling and they read beautifully! to worship Him. Jesus was kind as he hung dying on the cross Hamish Woods: He demonstrated dedication to his reading when he sought God’s forgiveness for those who had been malicious toward Him. Kindness means humbling yourself for Class Mass, by practicing and taking the job very seriously! when you’d rather be self-righteous. Being kind means you Max Nicholls-Ward: For helping a friend in need with their have to lay yourself down despite how you feel about that spilt lunch. person or situation. Kindness is easy when we like someone, but Jesus was kind to all—the poor, the sinners, the hopeless, the diseased, and even to those who tortured him. Lord, show us all the ways today in which just a kind word or friendly glance would make someone’s day. Interschool Cross Country Athletics Team Congratulation to the children who have been selected to represent our school as a member of the Bishop Michael Interschool Athletics Team. Confirmation Please keep in your prayers the children from our school and parish who will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation this Tuesday 5th August at 7.00pm in our St Josseph’s Church. [email protected] Ph.: 0457785639 APRE News Sacramental Program/ Youth Mass Last weekend the children prepared for the Sacrament of Confirmation, this weekend the children will prepare for the Sacrament of Eucharist. The children and their families will need to be at the church at 2pm. Parents are then to return at 5pm for Youth Mass. A big thank you to the following people who have assisted these children in their spiritual journey: Seana Mokrzecki, Fr. Mick, Fr. Terry, The Bennett’s, Brooke Gralow, Michelle Rich, Lisa MacDonald, Linda Jones, Athena Costopoulos and Belinda Walker. Please come along to Youth Mass and support these children as they continue this journey.
Please Keep in our Prayers * Kellie Keir and family * Gallagher’s and the new baby * those expecting a baby Heavenly Father, What a blessing it is when everyone is kind to one another. But we know in this world we run across all sorts of people who are inconsiderate, unthoughtful, and spiteful. Lord, we ask that you be with us today as we encounter others. Despite our feelings, we need you to help us to be good-hearted and compassionate to others. When that angry driver is riding our bumper, let us be the first to be considerate and let them pass. For that mom in the store with the kid throwing an inconsolable fit, let us be the one person who smiles and tells her she's doing a good job. Show us all the ways today in which just a kind word or friendly glance would make someone's day. We're here to shine your light, Lord. Make us a beacon in this dark world. Let not one opportunity for kindness pass us today. Keep our eyes open and our hearts soft to those hurting around us. Thank you Lord for the kindness you have shown us through your sacrifice on the cross. We pray that today we would be a perfect example of your gracious love. In Jesus' glorious name, Amen Jacqui Gardner APRE

Library Matters Book Week Parade Aug 27th : . Our theme this year is Connect to Reading. Children are encouraged to dress up as a character from a book that actually connected them to reading. It may have been the hungry caterpillar which they wanted to read over and over again or Zac Powers a series that kept them coming back. When I think back to my first memorable read that I so enjoyed; it was 'Famous five' by Enid Blyton. I couldn't wait to get through the whole series. This is a great discussion to have at the dinner table. Belinda Walker Teacher Librarian
Sharon Allen from Townsville Oztag has visited our school recently. She provided an Oztag lesson with each class. We now look forward to using our new skills.

Dear Parents Earlier in the year, my daughter and family initiated a Charity which we called G Up to raise some funds for Research into Alzheimer’s and Dementia Research with the Australian Foundation of the same name. We named it G Up as my father was affectionately called “G” by my children. We hope to raise $10,000. Since February we have had a number of events and written letters seeking donations for our charity. Funds currently sit at around $6000. For the last several years, my father lived with dementia and it slowly but surely overwhelmed him. Sadly, he lost his battle in the Easter holidays this year, and having experienced living with Dad on his journey with Dementia, we’d like to try to raise some money to enable research to continue, that will assist people and their families living with Alzheimer’s and Dementia in any way. We invite the children and their families to help us with a gold coin donation on Thursday, August 7, 2014. Should you wish to further assist, contact details are below. Sincerely, Helen Ciranni
