3D LASER SCANNING:
Now A Mainstream Quality Control Tool
SPEAKER: PIERRE ‘Pete’ AUBREY
CEO of ShapeGrabber Incorporated 3D scanners have been around for two decades now. The promise of a 3D scanner was the ability to fully digitize a physical object, creating a dimensionally accurate computer representation. The first industrial application of this technology was reverse engineering. There are many reasons why this is where laser scanning was first adopted: chiefly, the lack of good alternatives. To this day, most people who are aware of 3D scanners believe they are reverse engineering tools. From the beginning, however, there was a push to use 3D scanning technology for dimensional inspection. The advantages over traditional methods seemed compelling; the speed and the non-contact aspect of the measurement suggested like this was destined to become a mainstream technology for quality control. However, there were a few roadblocks preventing rapid adoption. continued on page 3

[email protected] President's Message Jon Meckley Hello, We are finally heading into spring! As I write this message, we are enjoying some very warm weather. Here at Penn State we are in the last few weeks of the semester. I am surprised how quickly this semester has gone. Before I know it, it will be over and we will be on our way to SPE’s ANTEC. Since ANTEC is starting right after graduation, we are only taking two student presenters. This month, we are having Shape Grabber talk about 3D Scanners. If you have never seen or heard of this process, you are in for a surprise. I look forward to seeing you at the meeting. About Our Speaker and Topic
Approximately 7-8 years ago, these roadblocks were finally overcome, and now 3D laser scanning is making major inroads into many areas of dimensional quality control formerly dominated by CMMs, Vision Systems and hand tools such as micrometers, calipers and hand gauges. Pierre Aubrey, CEO of ShapeGrabber Incorporated, will take you through the chronology of industrial adoption of 3D scanning, and will highlight some of the applications where the use of 3D laser scanning can bring significant benefits over traditional methods. continued from the Front Page
ShapeGrabber is a manufacturer of industrial 3D laser scanners, and is considered to be one of the industrial pioneers in the field, having been active in this area for close to two decades now. ShapeGrabber’s scanners are ideal for measuring complex shapes that are otherwise too time consuming, costly, or simply impossible to measure. ShapeGrabber scanners are both very fast and very easy to use in comparison to traditional Coordinate Machines (CMMs). ShapeGrabber is based in Ottawa, Canada.
Pierre ‘Pete’ Aubrey joined ShapeGrabber in 2001, shortly after the company spun out of Vitana, a designer and manufacturer of digital imaging products, where he was Vice President of Product and Business Development. Initially responsible for sales activities at ShapeGrabber, Pierre is currently the company’s President and CEO, and manages Operations and Marketing. He began his career as a Research Associate at the Canada Center for Remote Sensing. He next joined Telesat, Canada’s national satellite operator, where he spent 10 years in various roles, including Space(Mold / Die / Polishing) craft Reliability Engineer, Flight Dynamics Supply & Equipment Specialist and Project Manager. Penn State Student Chapter By Tim Farrell This will be my last article as the President of the Student Chapter of the SPE. I had a great time and I know all the other officers would say the same. I wanted to say goodbye and pass the torch to the new president for the next year. I would like to thank all of the faculty and the SPE for their support and guidance throughout the years. I would also like to thank the students for all of the hard work and dedication that they have Dean M. Tabich, Owner

displayed over the years towards the program. Through this hard work we have strived to make the Plastics Engineering Program reach further. In my eyes we have succeeded as a class, and will continue to succeed if everyone continues to put in the time, effort, and work. Thank you everyone for all that has been done for the program over the years. I think that the success of the students speaks for itself.
