RIM MOLDING

A New Product Strategy for the 21st Century presented by KEN SCHWEITZ, President, Premold Corp. Reaction Injection Molding (RIM) is perhaps the least understood and most under utilized of the low pressure processes for plastic parts. This is largely due to its relatively recent discovery and commercial application. Even more recent developments in RIM materials have allowed this high value process to compete with injection molding. Thin wall parts that meet UL flame requirements can be produced with faster cycle times. RIM is the low-pressure process that comes closest to duplicating injection molding’s attributes. It has impressive large-part, small volume and low initial investment capabilities. RIM molded parts account for about 6% of all the engineering grade resins used today. Many OEM’s in the medical, lab equipment, recreation,

and business machines industries are discovering that RIM can offer high quality molded parts with low tooling investments. They are using it in place of injection molding, vacuum forming, pressure forming, structural foam, sheet metal, or metal casting. The lower cost RIM tooling allows them to get products to market faster. They can also change their products more frequently to meet the demands of their changing market places. This presentation will introduce you to the RIM process and the resins available. You will learn how RIM can save your company money and time. We will review a design manual for RIM parts to understand the basics of RIM part design. Example parts and case studies will be presented.

President's Message Jon Meckley Hello, Spring is finally here. At Penn State, all we have left are final exams. As we start into the Summer season, it is time for the three-month SPE break. It doesn’t mean we will not be busy. We have planning for the Energy conference in September and a possible Top-Con for the Mold Making Division in October. We also need to get speakers for the rest of the monthly meetings. We will be at NPE in June. I plan on getting our speakers lined-up at that show. If there are any topics you would like to see at the meetings, please let me know. This will be the last newsletter until August. We will be putting out information on the golf outing before the next newsletter. Since the Energy conference is going to be more than just monthly meeting, we are going to need the reservations a little earlier than usual. This is going to be an exciting event that you do not want to miss. Please remember to renew your SPE memberships. If you know someone who is not a member, please urge them to join. This month, we are having a presenter from Premold. They do Reaction Injection Molding (RIM). This is a unique process that could be a possible process for some of your products. I look forward to seeing you and having a beer with you at the meeting. Jon

Ken Schweitz has over 30 years experience in product design and development. Most of this time has been focused on plastic parts. After working with vacuum forming, pressure forming, and injection molding he has spent the last fifteen years focusing on RIM.

Mr. Schweitz is very active in the RIM industry. He has published technical articles and written several part design guides. He maintains contact with other molders and various suppliers working to advance the science of RIM molding.

II. Part Design Advantages III. Material Developments IV. Low Cost, High Performance Molds V. Processing Equipment VI. Post Molding Versatility A. Machining B. Painting C. Decorating D. EMI / RFI Shielding VII. Terminology

Premold Corp. specializes in custom molding RIM parts in rigid urethane resins. They manufacture both cosmetic and structural parts. Each of their parts has solved a problem for their customers. Their RIM process allowed their customers to use molded plastic parts that could not be made with any other process at a tooling cost they could afford.
