TITLE: Communications Specialist SUPERVISOR: Director of Strategic Initiatives DATE PREPARED: July 14, 2016 Summary: Friends of the Chicago River is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic professional to serve as a communications specialist for our award-winning environmental organization. Position Overview: As a key member of the education and outreach team, the communications specialist will develop and implement strategic, creative, and integrated communications plans in support of all program areas for Friends of the Chicago River. The communications specialist will set plans based on best practices to advance Friends’ policy, education and outreach, and on-the-ground priorities. Working with the director of strategic initiatives, the communications specialist will help communicate emerging and ongoing river issues to increase awareness of Friends’ mission. As the only organization exclusively dedicated to improving the Chicago River, Friends seeks an individual who is committed to the environment and views the river as an important part of the history, culture, and future of the Chicago region. Communications plans should use a variety of tactics across multiple media channels, which include digital and print media and social media. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES           

Work with executive director and director of strategic initiatives to develop campaigns and co-manage content for Friends’ communications outlets (newsletter, e-alerts, web site, social media, and press) Research river issues and become well-versed in Friends’ priority initiatives on water quality, storm water management, and on-the-ground restoration, i.e. Overflow Action Day, wildlife habitat Assist with the copy editing of documents and prepare write ups Craft strategic social media communications plan; generate content for social media platforms Track and report on campaign metrics Maintain Friends’ web page with current information on all program areas Work closely with relevant teams in planning and carrying out press events and activities Develop and manage media contacts Oversee organization and storage of division’s digital photographs Participate in Friends’ annual all-staff events Special projects as necessary

Qualifications:          

B.S./B.A. in marketing, journalism, natural resources management, environmental studies, education or related field preferred Highly organized with experience managing multiple tasks Excellent verbal and written communication skills Marketing and/or outreach experience a plus Demonstrable skill with traditional and social media, including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram Ability to work efficiently and prioritize tasks to meet program and organizational goals Proven ability to work well with a diverse group of people Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends Interest in and commitment to improving and protecting natural resources and the Chicago River Willingness to serve with alacrity
