Theme: Anger, Knowing how to handle your anger Main Characters: Sophie, Her sister, her mom and her dad Illustrations: They are bold with vibrant contrasting colors. The colorful illustrations include shapes and looming, dark backgrounds that seem to represent Sophie’s anger. The jagged edges and large painted words assist in visualizing and almost feeling Sophie’s anger. Genre: Anti-bias it shows that we all get angry and we each have our own ways of calming down. Synopsis: One day Sophie was playing with a stuffed gorilla and her sister went over and took it from her. To make matters worse Sophie’s mother says “It is her turn now, Sophie.” Then Sophie tripped over a toy truck. Sophie got so angry she “exploded” like a volcano, and ran out of the house. As she ran farther into the forest she began to notice the bird chirping, this helped start to calm her down. Once she returned home, she is calm again. The children will be given a toilet paper roll, paint or markers, scissors, and construction paper to create a What ‘Bug’s’ me bug. Once finished the students will write on a square of construction paper what bugs or annoys them. Activity 2: “Are You Happy and You Know It…” As a class we will sing “Are you happy and you know it” but just a little differently so it covers a few different emotions and include appropriate ways to act when we feel like that. Then in small groups, the students will work on Express Yourself Handout. For each sentence, the students must circle which would be the appropriate way to behave. Once completed we will discuss as a class why they chose those answers.
Opinion: I really enjoyed this book because it was very relatable. We all get angry and we each have out different ways of dealing with it. I think it would be good to share with children because of the vibrant colors in the illustrations and the relatability.
