~Today’s Scripture Reading~ James 5:13-16 NKJV Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

EVERYDAY APPLICATION: USING THE CHURCH BULLETIN TO IMPROVE YOUR PRAYER LIFE You see them every Sunday morning. They come in various colors but recently have been a light green. They are usually on the table just as you enter the building. Most of the time, someone is at the door with a stack of them to distribute as people arrive. We’re talking about church bulletins. The church bulletin is one of the most important communication tools in any congregation. It functions as a clearinghouse of relevant information and comes in a format so simple that it can be tucked neatly into your Bible. Unfortunately, people sometimes leave the building and forget they have this tool at their disposal. They don’t think about it again until the next Sunday when a new bulletin is published. There is another tool that every believer has that is available for use at any moment but is also easily forgotten. This one can be used while sitting, standing, lying down, or kneeling. It can be used with the eyes open or closed. It is accessible morning, noon, or night. We’re talking about prayer. Prayer is our open channel to communicate with God himself. God speaks to us through the Bible, but we speak to him in prayer. (We also speak in song, but someone once said our songs and hymns can be viewed as a form of prayer to God.) We approach God’s throne with boldness because he is constantly available and always open to the call of his children. He listens whether it is a moment of joy or of crisis in the life of the one lifting prayer before him. Prayer can be a private confession or a public proclamation. We can go to our most private place to be alone in prayer, or we can join with other brothers and sisters as prayer is spoken in the church’s sacred assemblies. Many sincere disciples of the Lord have told me over the years that they just don’t know how to pray. The words they want to express in prayer don’t come easy for them. Their desire to pray is present, but the “how to” of prayer escapes them. Today, I want us to take these two resources – the church bulletin and prayer – and join them together in a “how to” format. When put into regular practice, this should significantly improve our walk with the Lord. Today’ lesson will be a biblically-based, prayerful journey through the words that are found in the church bulletin. The sick list is just a beginning point for using the bulletin in prayer. Lots of other categories of information are found there which will be addressed in the sermon and which need prayerful reflection. One bulletin item that should certainly be mentioned now and prayed about during this upcoming week is our “Spiritual Emphasis Day” with Dr. Philip Slate. He will be speaking during class and delivering the sermon next Sunday. Keep him and his wife, Pat, in prayer as they travel to be with us. Also, pray for our strengthening as we learn from what Philip will share. Make sure to take your bulletin with you today. Keep it with you throughout the week. Use it to its full potential. Allow God to make you into one of his prayer warriors. In the love of the Lord, David
