TOKYO
TOKYO FOR THE CURIOUS I'm often asked by people visiting Tokyo where they should go, so I've picked out a handful of the recommendations I've made over the years.

見上げるビアガーデン “LET’S LOOK UP” BEER GARDEN TOKYO SKYTREE TOWN
Beer Garden
If you're gonna make the trip to Sky Tree in the summer, Tokyo's latest landmark, you might as well visit their beer garden for BBQ and icy lagers.
いーぐる Jazz Club
ADAM ET ROPE BIOTOP (アダム エ ロペ ビオトープ)
Boutique
代々木VILLAGE Mall
DAIKANYAMA T-SITE Mall
Gorgeous flagship space of BIOTOP which supports "botanical lifestyles." Urban treehouse at centre with lush green cafe and boutique fashions.
Super stylish multi-use commercial ecocomplex from renowned retail designers. Gorgeous innovative space is sustainable and full of greenery and cool shops.
Lovely little enclave of shops nestled in the residential streets of Daikanyama. Tsutaya Bookstore at centre is great, and shopping in general is fab in area.

CONRAD TOKYO Hotel
茶・銀座 うおがし銘茶 銀座店 Café
OMOTESANDO KOFFEE(表参道コーヒー) Coffee Shop
A relic from the '60s when Jazz Kissas (Cafes) proliferated as an alternative living room for cramped students. The Eagle is for jazz listening - not talking!
Most people know to go to the Park Hyatt in Shinjuku (c/o Lost in Translation), but the Conrad is also great for drinks with a view, and next to Hamarikyu.
Cha Ginza is the best place to get highquality green tea in Ginza. In the upper floors above the shop is a minimalist tea room, perfect for a shopping break.
Since you're bound to go to Omotesando anyway if you're visiting Tokyo, seek out this gem of a coffee shop located in the residential backstreets. The best.

国立新美術館 (THE NATIONAL ART CENTER, TOKYO)

SCAI THE BATHHOUSE Art Gallery
アヒルストア Wine Bar
SHIBUYA PUBLISHING AND BOOKSELLERS Bookstore
Recommend their "Souvenir from Tokyo" project in their gift shop as a great place to find worthwhile souvenirs that are untouristy.
A contemporary art gallery located inside a former sento (public bath) that is in the heart of Shitamachi (old downtown Edoperiod Tokyo).
Ahiru Store is a teeny tiny wine bar with amazing food all handmade by a lovely pair of siblings. Get there at opening or prepare to wait. Worth it!
An indie publishing house with a bookstore in the front of their offices. Located on a great (small) street that connects Shibuya to Yoyogi Park.

はし田屋 (HASHIDAYA) Food
開花屋 (KAIKAYA) Seafood
Famous for their grilled chicken, their best dish is the Oyako-don (chicken & egg on rice). Beautiful setting along the Meguro canal.
A bit like a surf shack in the middle of Shibuya that does amazing seafood. Has English menus so I always recommend to travellers.
Tokyo doesn't do too many "boutique" hotels, but this one's the original and still the best. A bit off the beaten path but lovely rooms, dining and gallery.
