Tomorrows Foundation Visit in Kolkata WB (Padmanava Sen – 13th January 2017 –
[email protected] – Asha Bangalore/Asha Central Team) Snapshot of Visit: ● Visit Summary o Reached tomorrows foundation office on Pratapaditya road (near Rabindra Sarobar Metro) and met Indranil in the office. o Met Swarup Ghosh, co-founder of the organization and discussed a bit regarding Asha collaborations o Discussed the new proposal –Diganta with Arpan Banerjee o Went to the school where mother project is running (remedial coaching program). The students going to Dharmadas Trust Model KMCP school are given the coaching (Bengali Medium). Other than that in the same building, TF runs there Model school in Morning (urdu medium). o Met some students under the Sponsor-A-Child program (5-30 pm to 6-00 pm) o Went from class to class and asked simple academic questions (6 pm to 8 pm) ● Overall impression o Diganta - Their model school is running great (morning). Diganta is a project following this model school concept working with Government. Schools are identified by Government officials and they want to improve the infrastructure and teaching methods with an exit plan in each school. o Remedial coaching program – I mostly visited each class for 10-15 minutes. Compared to other Govt school children in Kolkata, the English seemed slightly weaker. However, I did not have enough time to understand their background completely. Supporting chapter may want to understand if they have any specific goals English wise. Other than that, they provide coaching to the students going to regular school in the same building. Apart from education, the coaching program gives the kids a breathing space. o Sponsor–A-Child program – The students supported are doing great. They are very hopeful about their future and most of them figured out a plan. Girls are definitely looking forward to getting a job after they finish studies. They are requesting for an expansion of this program by adding 53 more students to the current 50. More Details: Diganta project - Looking at the good quality of education in Model school of TF, they got this request of intervention in corporation schools from Member of Mayor in 1
council. In Kolkata, there is a big difference between state government run schools and corporation schools. They found out most corporation schools have multitude of problems and they need interventions in multiple ways. Diganta project will expand to 11 schools from one of their partners. But they received 6 more schools to support. The main interventions were community mobilization (to reduce drop outs and enrolments), survey among parents, providing TLM, health aspects and teacher training.
