Scholarship Update

Meet Your Board! Ed Maloney What got you involved in the welding industry? My father is the one who started me out first, he taught me some very basic SMAW and oxy/fuel welding. After that I started taking welding and machine tool classes in high school and working part time tool and die welding. My welding and machine tool teacher turned me on to Ferris State University and the welding program they had to offer. I knew after one visit to the campus I wanted to study welding there.

About 5 years ago the AWS West Michigan board members set a goal to raise more funds for our local scholarship. At the time we were giving out around $4,000 in scholarships per year. A few years ago AWS National announced a program where they would match local funds at 150 percent, which still continues today. With the continued hard work of the board members and local donors, we could give out $26,250 in scholarships to 12 twelve students in 2017. Each year the funds will grow and we will be able to give out more, continuing year after year! Here is a list of scholarships that are available through the West Michigan AWS section along with the names of the 2017 scholarship recipients. Apex Controls- Bernie TeBos Scholarship John Rapptte James Koster Scholarship Gibson Heckert Roman Manufacturing- West Michigan Section Scholarship Justin Wolfram West Michigan Scholarship # 2

Why did you join the AWS?

Justin Smith

I joined the AWS to help students. Before my time at Ferris I had no idea what the AWS was or how they could help students finically. I received scholarship funding from the AWS 3 years in a row while attended Ferris and I want to help spread that financial assistance to more students and at more levels of education.

West Michigan Scholarship # 1 (4 winners) Bryce Canada August Schmiedeknecht Casey Urlaub Kevin Volesky Dietrich And Betty Roth Scholarship Eric Vetter

What goals do you have for AWS West Michigan in 2017? My main goal for the AWS in 2017 is to have all the scholarship funds issued this year. After hearing about the leftover funds from last year I really wanted to promote the AWS and let high schools and community colleges know what the AWS has to offer and how we can help students with a career path in the weld industry.

Aim High – Jerry Clay Memorial Scholarship (3 winners) Richard Little Levi Woods Cassandra Machen

Congratulations to the 2017 winners, and a special thanks to the West Michigan board members for their hard work and dedication to help support the future of “OUR” welding society! If you are interested in donating to the West Michigan Scholarship fund while the match is at 150%, please contact one of your local AWS board members. Sincerely Kevin Fleming Scholarship Chairman, West Michigan Section for AWS [email protected]
