Township of Woodbridge Green Fleets Driver Training Policy 2012-2013 Mission Statement The Township of Woodbridge is dedicated to the concept of utilizing the policies of Green Driver Training as one of its best management practices. Goals and Responsibilities To achieve environmentally sound and efficient results in the area of reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions through proper driver training. Objectives The Township of Woodbridge’s Department of Public Works and Parks hereby formally supports the following practices to achieve the results stated in its Mission Statement. Driver Training * Rapid acceleration and deceleration * Idling * Speeding * Efficient Route Management * Pre-Trip Inspections * Excessive Braking * Spacing Between Vehicles Action Plan Woodbridge Township is dedicated to its Green Fleet Policy. The Department of Public Works and Parks shall oversee that the policy is carried out and will promote the practices and goals set therein. The Township has recently implemented an efficient collection system and has acquired a fleet of vehicles that require extensive training for drivers to undergo. As part of that training, drivers are required to be trained in the use of “Route Smart” which is a management tool that provides us with the most efficient route management practices to reduce fuel consumption and lower carbon emissions. GPS systems and radios are installed in all sanitation fleets to provide management the ability to track all vehicles to ensure that drivers are following the designed routes of the system. The Township has adopted a “No Idling” policy that requires all trucks to be shut down from idling for no longer than 2 minutes unless engaged in operation. Drivers are also required to perform pre-trip inspection of vehicles checking for proper tire pressure to ensure for efficient mileage when driving.
Defensive Driving training is provided to all drivers through the Township JIF which teaches the importance of driving at safe speeds, driving under established weight limits, keeping safe distance from vehicles in traffic and avoiding rapid acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle. These Driver Training policies have resulted in realizing a considerable reduction in fuel consumption. There has been a 21% decrease in the amount of fuel used by the Sanitation Department between 2008 through 2011. The Township will continue to update all employees with safety training through it’s JIF and will provide programs and training through other resources which further promulgate the concepts of proper “Green Driving Techniques”.

CURRICULUM:
Defensive Driving training is provided to all drivers through the Township JIF which teaches the importance of driving at safe speeds, driving under established weight limits, keeping safe distance from vehicles in traffic and avoiding rapid acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle.
