Message from the Director of Athletics Fellow ‘Runners: The “Transforming Lives – Vision 2025” Strategic Plan is a culmination of a lot of effort among many constituents to plan for the future of athletics at California State University, Bakersfield. This plan was made possible through a great show of teamwork from people who saw a bright future for CSUB Athletics. Our Championship Pillars of Promoting Academic Excellence, Providing an Outstanding Student-Athlete Experience, Pursuing Competitive Success, and Engaging the Community will continue to be our focus. In order to accomplish our goals in these areas we will put a strategic focus on three priorities. First, we will focus on our TEAM (coaches and staff) by investing in relationships to promote individual growth and collective success. Second, we will focus on our ‘RUNNER PLAYBOOK (department processes) with a focus of intentional actions that produce results. Finally, we will focus on our ‘RUNNER NATION (student-athletes, fans, etc.) by developing best in class service. I made a comment in my opening press conference that our department was going to set and reach lofty goals. I went on to say once we reach those goals, we are going to raise the bar. It is now time to raise the bar and this plan will guide us as we aim to reach once unimaginable results for our student-athletes, our community, and the University as a whole. Go ‘Runners!

Team Objective 1: Foster a culture of support and family. Initiatives A. B. C. D.

Bring staff and coaches together in a centralized workspace. Create a plan to address staffing needs. Enhance administrative support for coaches. Unify department by implementing quarterly development activities and/or events.

Objective 2: Support innovation, trust and empowerment. Initiatives A. B. C.

Assign sport liaisons for all support areas. Create a training program for mid-level employees. Encourage open dialogue and open lines of communication between coaches, support staff and executive staff.

Objective 3: Promote deliberate and cross-functional collaboration. Initiatives

Quarterly review of strategic plan in a “Vision Forum. Meet with team captains on a regular basis. Maximize efficiencies through an annual review of organizational structure. Identify concepts to build relationships with CSUB facility management.

Objective 4: Embrace diversity, inclusion and equity. Initiatives A. B. C. D.

Evaluate and improve strategies to enhance opportunities to diversify hiring pools. Enhance diversity, inclusion and equity education and best practices led by Diversity, Inclusion and Equity Cluster (DIE). Designate Chief Diversity Officer within athletics. Survey student-athletes about their experiences surrounding diversity and inclusion.

Develop a systematic approach to reward staff for excellent performance. Create professional development plans for staff and coaches. Develop a program for secondary sport supervision. Provide community outreach activities for staff and coaches.

Playbook Objective 1: Demonstrate operational efficiencies. Initiatives

A. Develop a long-range facility management and repair plan. B. Create a working group to review departmental policies and procedures and create a plan to effectively communicate to staff. C. Streamline human resources process and educate authorized hiring officials within athletics. D. Utilize functions of the ACS system to streamline departmental processes and increase the use of technology instead of paper. E. Create centralized athletics development operations. F. Complete 5-year budget plan for department which will reflect priorities reflected in strategic plan. G. Create a plan to organize a campus collaborative approach for team camps.

Objective 2: Ensure focus remains on highest priority work. Initiatives A. B. C.

Produce future set of strategies which will promote success and growth for department’s largest revenue producers. Construct a plan for budget growth and institutional support. Complete a 5-year revenue enhancement plan.

Objective 3: Enforce accountability measures. Initiatives A. B.

Produce a service agreement with CSUB facilities management that will specify all requirements for assistance with athletics venues. Continue to enhance the metric system for external staff and create accountability metric system for internal staff.

Objective 4: Achieve quality results. Initiatives A. B.

Establish a format to annually benchmark budget, revenues, expenses and salaries with other conference and national institutions. Review administrative organization chart and job responsibilities to ensure they are consistent with the future direction and plans of the athletics department.

Objective 5: Assure meaningful touch points with supporters and student-athletes. Initiatives

A. Develop a game management planning model and review process by appropriate staff for each revenue producing sport.

`Runner Nation Objective 1: Provide a quality academic and competitive environment for studentathletes. Initiatives A. B. C. D.

Make improvements to athletics and academic support facilities as outlined in the Facilities Master Plan. Fully fund scholarships across all sports including community funded. Enhance opportunities for tutoring and summer school for student-athletes. Prepare athletics facilities to host championship competitions.

Objective 2: Provide an outstanding student-athlete experience through personal and career development programs. Initiatives

A. Create a centralized approach in facilitating all life skills programs. B. Enhance opportunities provided to student-athletes through the `Runner Ready program. C. Continue to grow community partnerships. D. Establish and fund a budget for the `Runner Ready program.

Objective 3: Provide a quality game day experience. Initiatives

A. Provide permanent restrooms and concessions for all revenue producing sports. B. Enhance ticketing operations, including the ability to scan and provide electronic tickets. C. Implement post-game customer satisfaction survey.

Objective 4: Integrate into the identity of the community. Initiatives

Create a brand marketing plan to align with the identity of the community. Continue to develop the “Paint the Town” initiative. Expand the fan base to areas outside of Bakersfield, with a focus on Kern County. Increase the amount of apparel sold in the community.

Objective 5: Create an environment that fosters lifelong affinity and support. Initiatives



A. Create a plan to introduce kids to the Roadrunners. B. Implement new athletics “Hall of Fame Event” to include community supporters. C. Form a committee to enhance student-athlete recognition programs.
