BY JOEL LYONS PHOTOGRAPHY BY JASON CEOLA Formerly known as the laid-back landmark Sail Inn, this “dive lounge with a twist” is reinvigorating the inclusive and mellow atmosphere that is synonymous with Tempe. Trax, which opened May 11, resists trying to be a trendy nightclub, but mirrors some qualities of Scottsdale’s chic bars to the north. Partner Russell Plieseis explains how the lounge atmosphere at Trax will feature performances from local bands, the occasional open mic night and DJs. As chill as this place might be, well-dressed girls (and guys) gone wild are welcome, too. If you feel the need to cut loose, dancing on the platform tables is encouraged. Plieseis promises they’re sturdy enough for impromptu tail-feather shaking. Inhibitions will be out the door once DJ RePhil, the headlining act on Thursdays and Saturdays, takes the indoor stage surrounded by large-scale photographs of sexy, barely clad girls in thongs. Outside, patrons can enjoy another stage complemented with a large patio and plenty of space to stir up a conversation. “We’re a laid-back hang-out place,” Plieseis says, happily allowing patrons to kick back and also drop it like it’s hot. 26 S.
