TRIBUNAL COUNSEL (15+ Years)

The Law Society of Alberta is the self-governing body for Alberta's lawyers with a mandate to regulate the profession in the public interest. As a regulator, the Law Society sets standards and enforces those standards for Alberta lawyers.

The Law Society of Alberta is seeking a Tribunal Counsel to manage its Tribunal Office. The Tribunal Office supports a variety of tribunals, oversees the initiation of the hearing process, and provides support during hearings and the decision-making process. The Tribunal Office supports conduct hearings and appeals, assurance fund hearings, and good character hearings, as well as hearings and applications dealing with interim suspensions, disbarments, resignations, and reinstatements. The Tribunal Office is expected to assume responsibility for an increasing number of the Law Society’s adjudicative processes.

As the ideal candidate, you will have over 15 years call to the Bar, knowledge of professional regulatory models across diverse professions, proven experience working with adjudicative and/or administrative tribunals, and solid understanding of the business processes and the dayto-day work required to manage tribunals. You must recognize and be guided by the public interest aspect of adjudicative work, and identify fruitful areas for change and implement those changes in the workplace.
