PARISH TRANSITIONS THIS WEEK: DEATHS: Jeff Hall, 7/23 (May he rest in peace) Jeff’s funeral
HOLY LIVING AND HOLY DYING “Holy Living and Holy Dying” is actually the titles of two books written in the 1650 and 1651 by Jeremy Taylor, an Anglican priest and bishop who served both in England and Northern Ireland. He was known as a great pastor to the people in the parishes he served. His writing on Holy Dying offered prayers and practices to consider in preparing for the death of church members. One hundred years later, his pastoral writings were much appreciated by the founder of Methodism, John Wesley. Last week, news came to us that Jeff Hall had died at home quietly and alone. And yet, in the days to follow, much has been spoken of the days preceding his death -- things he did, people he spoke with, energy he experienced, his call to me about bringing AA sessions back to Trinity and his helping to distribute Holy Communion to others two weeks ago. Holy Dying is as important as Holy Living. We get to do it once in our life and so to prepare for it is actually a spiritual exercise that calls for regular reflection and prayerful study. Holy Dying is not an event but rather it is a practice entered into by people of faith. It is our moment for stepping over into another dimension of reality. More later about Holy Dying......
