Turning Can’ts Into Cans and Dreams Into Plans By Lori Fogle I’m strolling down cobbled streets past the ornate façade of Notre Dame Cathedral obscured by cherry blossoms, pink and fluffy like cotton candy. Later, I make like Audrey Hepburn and dip into Angelina Tea Room for a creamy cup of hot chocolate with a dollop of whipped cream. I nibble a pastry and marvel at its airy layers. The day would not be complete without perusing the padlocks on Lover’s Bridge with my significant other and tossing our own key into the River Seine. Looking back from the mirrored surface is the visage of woman on her way to success. No, this is not a dream. This is Paris in spring- where I would visit, if I could go anywhere I wanted. In the past, I considered this unrealistic not unlike how I viewed making money as a
freelance writer. Fortunately, AWAI and the programs they offer have changed my scope of reality. Not only do I believe I can become a highly paid freelance writer, living the writer’s life, I believe I can sit on the balcony of the Shangri-La Hotel in “The City of Light” and gaze at the Eiffel Tower illuminating the night. After becoming acquainted with AWAI and the programs offered to transform someone with a love of writing into a working copywriter, I no longer feel I have to just “get by” until my next vacation. I can live a life where I enjoy what I’m doing and don’t need to escape! I selected Paris as my destination of choice because it’s always been a dream. But as I selfreflect on where I want to go both professionally and around the globe, I wonder why we use the words dream and goal interchangeably. Dreams are fleeting. They seem real only for a brief moment. You wake up from dreams. Maybe we do it because of a lack of confidence, fear of failure or because we are wary of the unknown. Most likely, it’s because of all of these reasons that we label our goals as merely dreams. But dreams are not something we are in charge of. Dreams happen to us not because of our calculated steps leading towards our desired result. So now I prefer to call a trip to Paris a goal and also consider becoming a successful copywriter a goal, not a dream. “A dream written down with a DATE becomes a goal. A goal broken down into STEPS becomes a plan. A plan backed by ACTION makes your dreams come true.” -Greg S. Reid So oui, mon bon ami, Paris will be an unforgettable spot to visit. And even though I will enjoy seeing the Louvre with some of the most famous artwork in the world and Sainte-Chapelle, considered among the highest achievements of Gothic architecture, or the stunning landmark, Sacre-Coeur, they will have nothing on the writer’s life I’ll be living!
