Cutting Directions: 1. Fabrics A, B, C, and D: Cut one strip measuring 8 1/2" x the width of the fabric from each fabric. 2. Fabric E (Dark Solid): Cut 3 strips measuring 3 1/2” x the width of the fabric. Cut 5 strips measuring 2 1/2" x the width of the fabric for the binding. 3. Fabric F (White Solid): Cut one piece measuring 11 1/2" x 41 1/2". 4. Tulle: Cut 4 strips measuring 2 1/2” x the width of the tulle.
Dimensional Tutu Section: 1. Using the disappearing marking pen, make vertical marks at 4 1/4”, 15 1/4", 26 1/4”, and 37 1/4”. These lines will help you to center each of the tutus. 2. Using one of the cut tulle strips, sew the short ends together, creating a large circle. Fold in half lengthwise, with the seams on the inside. Sew a long basting stitch ¼” from the fold, pull the gathers tightly and evenly, and secure with a knot. Sew the completed tutu onto the center of the first drawn line, as shown:
3. Repeat with the remaining 3 strips of tulle, and sew one tutu onto the center of each drawn line. 4. Using the applique template, prepare 1 circle from each fabric (use the leftover fabric section for this). Applique the corresponding circle in the middle of each tutu, as shown:
Piecing Directions: Seam allowances are ¼” unless specified otherwise. 1. Sew the strips together, right sides together, and pressing the seams toward the dark solid fabric, in the following order: A. Fabric A B. Fabric E C. Fabric B D. Fabric E E. Fabric C F. Fabric E G. Fabric D 2. Cut across the strips just sewn so that there are two different pieces, one measuring 28 1/2" long and the other measuring 9 1/2" long. Save the leftover piece for the appliquéd circles. 3. With right sides together, sew the 28 1/2" section onto the top of the completed tutu section. Press the seams open. 4. With right sides together, sew the completed piece onto the 9 1/2" section. Press the seams open. 5. Secure the Jumbo Rick Rack over both seams of the tutu section, using a zig-zag stitch, as seen in the photos. *An Elmer’s Washable glue stick works perfectly to hold the rick rack in place while sewing it on. It can be repositioned, and then heat set in place with a hot iron before being sewn on. Any extra glue will easily wash out with water.*
Finishing Directions: 1. Layer the quilt top, batting, and backing fabric together. 2. Quilt by hand or machine, as desired. 3. Sew the 2 ½” binding strips cut from fabric E together into one long strip. Press the seams open. Press the wrong sides together to create a long strip that is 1 ¼” wide. 4. Bind the quilt using your favorite method.
