zilli Project Location: Tysons Galleria – McLean, VA Project Category: Interior Architecture Project Synopsis: Zilli has become the premier ultra-luxury retailer in men’s fashion around the globe. With stores in dozens of countries, and a flagship in New York City, its next move was to court the affluent power-players in the Washington, DC area. Zilli found a logical home in the elite Tysons Galleria retail center, where a new interior design could flourish. The existing brand relies on strong masculine elements – dark stained mahogany, deep polished brass, black marble – to convey its image. In this location, the brand elements were rethought and inspired by the symbols of power in DC: the entry is a long, straight approach terminated by a monumental gilded icon in the spirit of L’Enfant’s avenues; the private fitting area is shaped by a custom round carpet with a dome ceiling above, echoing the oval office and capitol dome; the entire store is designed on a central axis with amenities flanking the sides like the national mall. To emphasize this power-scheme, the store was dramatically lit to accentuate its symmetry, its focal points and its handsome color palette. Discreet yet powerful lighting was embedded into each piece of casework to locally illuminate retail items and general merchandise lighting supplemented where needed.
