The announcement was made by ESPN Events, a subsidiary of ESPN. The Anteaters will be part of a strong field that includes Arizona, Boise State, Boston College, Evansville, Michigan State, Providence and Santa Clara. Pairings and game times will be announced in late July or early August. The first two days of the tournament will be played at Cal State Fullerton with the final day of competition at the Honda Center in Anaheim. UCI participated in the inaugural event, previously known as the Anaheim Classic, in 2007.
RADIO COVERAGE Michael O’Sullivan is in his first year as play-by-play announcer for Anteater basketball. Steve Henkle returns as analyst for home and selected road games.
ABOUT MORGAN STATE: The Bears, under the direction of ninth-year head coach Todd Bozeman, are 1-8 overall and have not played since a 62-58 loss to Hampton Dec. 8. Morgan State is a member of the Mid-East Athletic Conference. Senior guard Blake Bozeman, son of the head coach, leads the Bears in scoring at 13.8 points per game.
ANTEATERS STOP SACRAMENTO STATE IRVINE, Calif. --- Senior post John Ryan scored 14 points and junior guard Alex Young added 13 to lead UC Irvine past Sacramento State, 74-62, in a non-conference game at the Bren Events Center Dec. 6. Ryan hit 7 of 9 shots in tying his career high for points and he added seven rebounds.
Junior forward Cedric Blossom is averaging 11.1 points and leads the Bears in rebounding at 6.6 boards per game.
Young also registered four assists and two steals while sophomore post Ioannis Dimakopoulos scored 11 points, hitting 5 of 8 from the field.
Morgan State’s one win to-date is 51-50 over Liberty Nov. 26.
Dylan Garrity led the Hornets with 18 points and Mikh McKinney added 17.
UT ARLINGTON DEALS UC IRVINE 70-62 LOSS IRVINE, Calif. --- UT Arlington handed UC Irvine its first home loss of the season as the Mavericks topped the Anteaters, 70-62, at the Bren Events Center Saturday night. UTA shot 49 percent from the field and limited UCI to 35.6 percent as the Mavericks improved to 5-4 on the season and the ‘Eaters fell to 4-4. UCI is 3-1 at home this season. The teams were tied 14 times in the game, the last at 60-60 with 2:14 remaining before UTA went on a 10-2 run to close out the contest. Drew Charles hit a three with 59 seconds left to give the Mavericks the lead for good at 63-60 and UTA hit 7 of 8 free throws in the final 41 seconds. Sophomore guard Luke Nelson tied his season high with 19 points for UCI, senior forward Will Davis II scored 13 points and senior post John Ryan had eight points and eight rebounds. Junior guard Alex Young registered a career-high six steals, all in the first half, and he added a team-high four assists. Charles and Kevin Hervey led the Mavericks with 15 points apiece while Greg Gainey added 11 off the bench. Nelson scored 11 of UCI’s first 13 points as the ‘Eaters built a six-point lead at 13-7 with 14:02 left in the opening half. UTA went up by 10 late in the first half at 37-27 with 3:46 remaining and led 40-34 at halftime. UCI regained the lead at 48-46 on a basket by Davis with 9:29 left in the game and the lead changed hands seven times from there before the Mavericks posted their gameclosing run. The ‘Eaters hit just 4 of 24 threes in the game and UTA was 9 of 21. UCI did have a season-high 12 steals in the game.
McKinney scored the first basket of game to give Sacramento State its only lead of the contest as UCI gained control midway through the opening half and led 34-27 at the break. Young scored nine of his points in the first half and Ryan eight. The ‘Eaters led by at least seven points the entire second half and built their largest lead of 20 points at 68-48 on a basket by Davis with 4:53 remaining. UCI shot 50.8 percent from the field to the Hornets’ 41.2 percent and the ‘Eaters outscored Sacramento State, 4618, in the paint. UCI won the battle of the boards, 36-28. This was just the fifth meeting in the series between the ‘Eaters and Hornets with UCI now holding a 3-2 lead. FOUR SIGN WITH ANTEATERS: UCI head coach Russell Turner and his staff have landed an impressive quartet of recruits in its November signing class. The Anteaters’ program will be bolstered with the addition of current prep seniors Max Hazzard, Brandon Smith, Darrian Traylor and Justin Wertner. Hazzard is an ESPN three-star point guard from Loyola High School in Los Angeles and the grandson of former UCLA head coach and Los Angeles Lakers standout Walt Hazzard. Max Hazzard selected UCI over schools such as Cal Poly, Loyola Marymount, San Jose State and Brown. His brother, Jacob, plays at Arizona. Smith is a 6-5 wing who averaged 16 points and 8 rebounds for Godinez High in Santa Ana last season when he earned All-Orange Coast League honors. Traylor is an ESPN three-star shooting guard out of Centennial High in Las Vegas, Nev. The 6-3 Traylor chose UCI over Utah State, Weber State, San Francisco, Northern Colorado and Brown. Wertner, a 6-5 shooting guard, is an ESPN three-star recruit from Saint George’s Independent School in Collierville, Tenn. He is planning to serve a two-year Latterday Saints Mission before joining the UCI program in the summer of 2017.

Russell Turner, in his fifth season at UC Irvine, was named 2014 Big West Conference Coach of the Year and NABC District 9 Coach of the Year after leading the Anteaters to their first league regular-season title in 12 years and a second consecutive 20-win season. Turner guided the ‘Eaters to a 23-12 overall record in 201314 and a 13-3 mark in Big West play. The 23 wins tied for the second-highest mark in UCI history. Five of his players received Big West postseason recognition. He has led the ‘Eaters to 44 wins over the past two seasons and two consecutive postseason appearances, including the 2014 NIT. Turner led the ‘Eaters to a 16-0 record last season when holding the opposition to under 60 points and a 21-1 mark when the opponents shot less than 40 percent from the field. His 2013-14 squad shattered the school record for single-season blocked shots with 224. Turner was named UCI’s head coach April 9, 2010, after serving the previous six seasons as an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association following positions at Stanford University and Wake Forest University. Turner worked under Hall-of-Fame caliber coaches Don Nelson (Golden State), Mike Montgomery (Stanford) and Dave Odom (Wake Forest). As a player at Hampden-Sydney, Turner was a two-time All-American (1991 & 1992) and set the school's career scoring record of 2,272 points. He was a member of Hampden-Sydney's first two NCAA tournament teams. Turner was inducted into Hampden-Sydney's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. He graduated magna cum laude in 1992 with a B.A. in English and economics. Turner is a native of Roanoke, Va. He and his wife, Elizabeth, a physician, have two children, Devlin and Darius.

12 – IOANNIS DIMAKOPOULOS, 7-2, So., F Scored season-high 11 points in Dec. 6 win over Sacramento State…averaged 2.1 points and 1.3 rebounds last season…scored a career-high 16 points in 18 minutes of last season’s Nov. 17 win over Pacifica College, hitting 6 of 9 shots…also had a high of five rebounds in that victory. 2013 McDonald’s All-American nominee from Cathedral High School in Los Angeles…played for the Panathinaikos U18 Team that won the 2011 Greek Championship.

24 – DOMINIQUE DUNNING, 6-4, Jr., G Had a career-high eight rebounds in Dec. 3 loss at Fresno State and season-high eight points in Dec. 6 win over Sacramento State…played in 29 games last season, averaging 4.3 points and 2.6 rebounds…scored a careerhigh 20 points in 13 minutes of last season’s Feb. 15 win over UC Riverside, hitting 8 of 9 field goals…shot 50 percent from the field for the season…played in 20 games for New Mexico in the 2011-12 season before transferring to UCI…earned first team California all-state honors at Centennial High School in Corona…was a finalist for Mr. Basketball in the state of California as a senior in 2011.

ANTEATERS PICKED FIRST IN BIG WEST: UCI has been picked to win the Big West Conference for the second straight year in the league’s preseason media poll, in addition to multiple publications. ● UCI returns four starters off last season's team that finished 23-12 overall and 13-3 in the Big West, winning the program's first conference regular-season title in 12 years. The 13 league wins were the most for UCI in the past 11 years. The Anteaters lost at top-seeded SMU, 68-54, in the 2014 NIT First Round.
LOOKING BACK AT UC IRVINE IN 2013-14 ● Defense was a major factor in UCI’s success last season, as in the final NCAA statistics, the Anteaters ranked third in the nation in field-goal percentage defense at .374, fourth in total blocked shots with a school-record 224 and fifth in blocked shots per game at 6.4. ● In games from Feb. 1 through the end of last season, UCI was the No. 1 team in the nation in field-goal percentage defense at .339. The next team in the rankings was at 36.3 percent. ● UCI’s 23 wins last season tied for second-most in program history. UCI, under head coach Russell Turner, has won 44 games over the last two seasons, advancing to the postseason both years. The Anteaters competed in the 2014 NIT, losing at eventual tournament runner-up SMU, 68-54, in the first round. ● Turner was named 2014 Big West Conference Coach of the Year and NABC District 9 Coach of the Year. ● The ‘Eaters were 19th in the nation last season in assists per game at 15.6, and 38th in scoring defense at 63.7 and in field-goal percentage at .470. ● Last season, UCI was 16-0 when holding the opponents to less than 60 points and 21-1 when limiting the opposition to under 40-percent shooting from the field. The ‘Eaters were 12-4 in the Bren Center last season and have won 26 of their last 31 games at home. ● Senior forward Will Davis II was named to the 2014 Big West All-Tournament Team and also received Big West honorable mention recognition. Davis led UCI in rebounding for the second straight season with an average of 6.4 boards per game, he averaged 11 points, and he ranked third in the Big West in field-goal percentage at 56.7 percent. He is UCI’s career leader in blocked shots with 174. ● Guard Luke Nelson was named the Big West Conference Freshman of the Year and also to the All-Big West second team after he led the team in scoring at 11.8 points per game. Nelson also led UCI with 74 three-point field goals and 38 steals. ● 7-6 center Mamadou Ndiaye, the nation’s tallest player, was named the Best Defensive Player in the Big West as a freshman last season after he set the UCI and Big West Conference single-season records with 106 blocked shots. Ndiaye also was named to the All-Big West honorable mention squad. He was selected to this season's All-Big West preseason team. ● Guard Alex Young ranked 58th nationally with an assist/turnover ratio of 2.3 as a sophomore last season.
