ON THE ROAD AGAIN: With its pair of matches at Youngstown State and Robert Morris this weekend, UIC will play away from its Flames Athletic Center home for the first time in six matches. The Flames posted a 4-2 record over the course of their lengthy stay in Chicago, and are 0-3 in road contests so far in 2009. IN THE HORIZON: The Youngstown State match will be the third of the year in Horizon League play for the Flames, who are currently 2-0 in conference play. UIC opened its Horizon League slate with a pair of wins on its home court, defeating Milwaukee 3-0 Sept. 19 and Green Bay 3-1 Sept. 20. LAST TIME OUT: UIC posted its second Horizon League win of the year with a 3-1 (25-19, 15-25, 25-16, 25-21) win against Green Bay at the Flames Athletic Center Sunday afternoon. Freshman Kelsey Safranek led the Flames with a career-high 17 kills in the match on .400 hitting. Casie Sullivan and Jessica Dalke each recorded a double-double, with Sullivan tallying 11 kills and 15 digs, while Dalke dished out 40 assists and added a team-high 18 digs. THE PENGUINS: Youngstown State comes into the weekend on a seven-game losing streak. The Penguins are 0-2 in Horizon League play, having lost to Butler and Valparaiso Sept. 17 and 18. YSU will host Loyola Friday prior to its matchup with UIC Saturday. Overall, the Penguins have a 2-10 record in 2009, having posted wins against Stoney Brook and the College of Charleston. THE COLONIALS: Robert Morris is 3-11 on the season, with all three of its wins coming on its home floor. The Colonials have played three Horizon League opponents so far in 2009, falling in straight sets to Cleveland State, Butler and Green Bay. Robert Morris has another Horizon League weekend, hosting Loyola Saturday night in addition to its match with the Flames Sunday. DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: UIC junior middle blocker Epiphany Davis was selected as the Horizon League’s Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 14-20. Davis rejected a League-high 17 balls during the week’s three matches en route to earning the honor.

RECORD BLOCKING: Senior Lana Lobdell is running away with the UIC team leads for blocks. Lobdell currently tops the list with 50.0 total blocks (3 BS, 47 BA). For her career, Lobdell is currently in fifth place in the UIC record books for block assists with 281. She passed Teaha Shepperd (2000-03) with her four blocks Sept. 19, and her next target is Lynn Clarkson (19982001), who posted 283 block assists during her UIC career. The Flames’ career leader in block assists, Ambria Springer (2003-06), recorded 312 block helpers while at UIC. FIRST YEAR LEADER: UIC head coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley is in her first year at the helm of the Flames’ volleyball squad. Schumacher-Cawley earned her first head coaching win with a 3-2 decision against Western Illinois Aug. 28. She earned her first win on the Flames Athletic Center floor at the UIC Invitational with a 3-0 sweep of Georgia State Sept. 11. A highlydecorated Chicago Southside athlete, Schumacher-Cawley stepped up into the head job after six seasons as an assistant at UIC. Her staff includes second-year assistant Sara Hughes, first-year assistant Ellen Hayes and volunteer assistant Dan Buerhing. IN THEIR LEAGUE: Casie Sullivan, Jessica Dalke, Lana Lobdell and Epiphany Davis currently find themselves ranked in the top 10 of some Horizon League statistical categories. Sullivan’s 3.13 kills per set average is good for sixth in the circuit, while she averages 3.39 points per set (ninth in the HL). Dalke’s 537 assists and 10.33 assists per set average are good to put her in second place in the league, while she is also third in third with a service aces per set average of 0.33. Dalke leads the Flames with 17 aces on the year. Lobdell owns a .299 hitting percentage, good for fifth, while she also takes a spot on the blocks listing with 0.96 per set, good for sixth.
