The UN Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNLIREC) forms part of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA). UNLIREC was created by the General Assembly in 1986 and is headquartered in Lima, Peru. UNLIREC, as the sole UN regional entity mandated to address disarmament and non-proliferation issues in Latin America and the Caribbean, assists Member States in their implementation of their obligations found in international disarmament instruments by strengthening their capacity and providing technical and substantive guidance and assistance to achieve sustainable peace and security.

Mandate UNLIREC provides disarmament expertise to countries in the region through capacity-building, outreach and advocacy, and technical assistance. UNLIREC operates in close partnership with regional and subregional organizations, as well as civil society organizations and other United Nations entities.

• UNLIREC´s Inter-Institutional Training Course on Combating Illicit Firearms Trafficking selected as regional best practice for firearms control • Over 3,500 law enforcement officials trained on combating illicit firearms trafficking • Most extensive in-house disarmament and public security expert team in the region • Over 100 disarmament conferences and high-level meetings undertaken • Support in the destruction of 550,000 firearms and 700,000 rounds of ammunition
