Big Stitch Quilting Tips • Big Stitch Quilting allows the beginning quilter a way to finish their quilted project without needing to learn machine quilting techniques. It gives the project a modern, decorative look with a soft feel and can be fun and relaxing to do. • The technique is simple; the main difference between Big Stitch quilting and Traditional quilting is the size of thread and needle used. 100% Cotton batting also makes this technique go smoothly. continued on next page... © 2017 Fabric Editions, Inc. tips continued... • Thread – Perle cotton comes in several sizes. The #5 size is thicker and readily available in a variety of colors. The resulting stitches are bigger and more dramatic. The #8 and #12 sizes can be easier to sew with because they are finer. Embroidery floss gives a different look and feel; use all six strands to get the best effect. Experiment to see what you like and what works best for your project. • Needle – A #5 hand embroidery needle is recommended. Again, experiment with needles to find one with a large enough eye to fit the thread, and slim enough to go through the layers easily. • Quilting – Use about 18" (45.72cm) of thread at one time. Tie a knot at the end of the thread and “pop” it through the layers from the back. Take even running stitches through all layers, about ¼" (6.35mm) apart, one or two at a time. When you come to the end of the thread, tie a knot and “pop” it back between the layers.
Running Stitch
• Use of a hoop is optional.

Sewing Tip: Place fabric pieces wrong side up on fine grain sandpaper when drawing lines with pencil and ruler. This will keep the pieces from shifting. 1. Flying Geese Unit: Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of a 12281-Lt. Blue 2 ½" (6.35cm) square. Place RST on the left side of a 12286-Green rectangle (2 ½" x 4 ½", 6.35cm x 11.43cm). Sew on the diagonal line. Trim seam to ¼" (6.35mm). Press triangle open. Repeat with the second 12281-Lt. Blue 2 ½" (6.35cm) square on the right side of the rectangle. The finished size should be 2 ½" x 4 ½" (6.35cm x 11.43cm). Repeat to make four units. 12881-Lt. Blue 2 1⁄2" x 2 1⁄2" (6.35cm x 6.35cm)

Repeat using eight 12281-Lt. Blue 2 ½" (6.35cm) squares with four 12285-Blue rectangles (2 ½" x 4 ½", 6.35cm x 11.43cm) to make four units. Use 16 12282-Blue 2 ½" (6.35cm) squares with eight 12281-Lt. Blue rectangles (2 ½" x 4 ½", 6.35cm x 11.43cm) to make eight units.
2. Half-Square Triangle Unit: Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of a 12281-Lt. Blue 3" (7.62cm) square. Place RST on top of a 12289-Lt. Blue 3" (7.62cm) square. Note: Fabric is directional. Check placement of stripe before sewing. Sew ¼" (6.35mm) away from the line on both sides of the diagonal line. Cut on the drawn line; press as shown by the arrow. Square up to 2 ½" x 2 ½" (6.35cm x 6.35cm), keeping seam centered. Make a total of 16.

Tip: Squaring Up – The squares were cut slightly larger to allow for individual sewing variations. Use a 6" x 6" (15.24cm x 15.24cm) quilter’s square to slightly trim two sides, keeping the seam centered on the diagonal. Turn the half-square triangle 180° to trim the other two sides. 3. Four X Unit: Draw two diagonal lines on the wrong side of a 12283-Orange 5 ¼" (13.34cm) square to make an “X”. Place RST on top of a 12282-Blue 5 ¼" (13.34cm) square. Sew ¼" (6.35mm) away from the left side of each line, stopping at the center. Cut on the drawn lines to make four triangles. Carefully press in the direction of the arrow. Repeat with the two remaining 5 ¼" (13.34cm) squares to make a total of eight triangles.

Place two triangle units as shown and sew RST, nesting the seams; press. Square up to 4 ½" x 4 ½" (11.43cm x 11.43cm) if needed, keeping seams centered and trimming small triangles (“dog-ears”) at the corners. Make a total of 4.
5. Rows 2 and 4: Place two 12281-Lt. Blue squares (2 ½" x 2 ½", 6.35cm x 6.35cm), two Half-Square Triangle Units and one 12284-Blue rectangle (2 ½" x 4 ½", 6.35cm x 11.43cm) as shown. Sew pieces RST; press. The row should measure 2 ½" x 12 ½" (6.35cm x 31.75cm). Repeat to make a total of eight rows.
6. Row 3: Place two 12282-Blue/12281-Lt. Blue Flying Geese Units, two 12282-Blue rectangles (2 ½" x 4 ½", 6.35cm x 11.43cm) and one Four X Unit as shown. Sew pieces RST; press. The row should measure 4 ½" x 12 ½" (11.43cm x 31.75cm). Repeat to make a total of four rows. www.fabriceditions.com

Press finished table runner top and backing fabric. Tape backing wrong side up to a firm surface. Layer batting and top (right side up). Baste the layers together with safety pins.
Big Stitch Hand Quilting: Follow the diagram for suggested thread color and stitch placement and refer back to the Technique – Big Stitch Quilting section for specific information. Trim backing and batting even with top.
Note: If you prefer to machine quilt, you can follow the same quilting lines. Be sure to quilt “in the ditch” or seams between each block as well. It is also quite popular to combine machine quilting with the decorative Big Stitch Quilting. Have fun and enjoy the process!

Finishing
12. To make the binding, remove selvages and sew the short ends of the 12289-Lt. Blue strips (1- 2 ½" x 16", 6.35cm x 40.64cm and 3 — 2 ½" x wof, 6.35cm x 106.68cm) RST end to end at a 45˚ angle to make one continuous strip; press seams open. Press one short end ¼" (6.35mm) to the wrong side. Fold in half lengthwise with wrong sides together; press. Leaving a 2" (5.08cm) tail on the folded end, place cut edges of folded binding even with the edge of the table runner top and sew, mitering the corners. Overlap ends, trim any excess and finish sewing the binding. Fold binding over to back and hand stitch.
