IN THE INTERIM [Marty] There is no question that the church and culture often clash. This is not new. Throughout history we have seen this dynamic. As we look into the future I expect we will continue to struggle with ongoing cultural changes (often very rapid) and the churches response (often very slow). As you look at our church, in what ways do you see culture clashing with the identity and mission of Union Park Baptist? I’m not really interested in national surveys and statistics, which provide only snapshots of large culture groups over a broad area. Let’s talk about where we live. Do we minister toward these cultural clashes or steer the church away from them? How do we set our priorities in outreach? Do we set priorities in outreach? Have we established who we are reaching out for? There are some, I’m sure, that want church to be a warm fuzzy cocoon where we, as Christians, are safe from the prickles and thorns of the prevailing culture we find in the world. We come for protection, we come for relief, we come for rejuvenation. And, there is nothing wrong with that unless it becomes the goal, the end result. Can our church be reaching out to the world but still remain in a cocoon?

What do you think of this statement? “As Christians we have the holy responsibility to teach scriptural responses to the clashes with culture that arise.” I would like to hear your response. Look around at UPBC, look around our neighborhood, look at our community. Take a moment and name the top three ways you feel the church is clashing with “our” culture. Email me or use the communication card with your responses. Next month I’ll share some of your insights.

about marriage, or, to be particular- Christian marriage. Specifically, what makes a marriage Christian? I’m sure there are more than three, but I want to focus on three things that I think are the most important for a Christian marriage. You may disagree or you might even agree. Either way, I hope it starts a conversation- between you and your spouse, or your parents, or grandparents, or maybe someone who is thinking about getting married- about what a Christian marriage is. The first important thing is to put Christ first in all things. When you accept Christ as your personal Savior you are saying that Christ comes first in your life. Because Christ is first in your life, everything else is secondary. This includes your spouse. That means that as a married couple all your hopes, dreams, possessions, all come under the authority of Jesus Christ. Your very lives come under that same authority. This is why I don’t marry couples who have not professed Jesus Christ as Lord. They are living under different plans and ideas. It’s great that you love each other. I make that assumption when you ask me to marry you. But, do you both believe in Jesus as Savior? That’s the key question. So as a married couple, have you placed Christ first in all things? If not, stop now and evaluate your situation and put Him first.

MISSIONS [Rowena] During the worship service, Sunday, March 22nd, we were challenged to go on a mission trip to Child Evangelism Fellowship international headquarters in Warrenton, Mo. There are a variety of ways we can help and serve the Lord there. We have reservations for up to ten people, leaving Des Moines May 31st and returning June 5th. The total cost for each participant will be $10 per night for a total of $50.00, which can be paid upon arrival. The transportation expense will come from the mission budget. Completed applications must be sent to CEF six weeks before our scheduled week of service. We have no time to waste in deciding to go and getting registered. I will meet with you individually and later as a group when we know who is committed to making this trip. I have detailed information to give you now. Note the pictures on the mission bulletin board and ask to see the DVD. ~ Rowena (277-5237)
