Fall term: January 15th Winter term: September 15th Welcome to the Mechanical Engineering Department Thank you for your interest in the Mechanical Engineering (ME) Graduate Program. As you know, ME at Michigan is a graduate program on the move. Since 2002, we’ve had a boom of new faculty members and research funding while maintaining our consistent leadership as one of the top 5 ME programs in the nation by US News and World Report. Our multi-disciplinary approach to research and learning strikes a unique balance of trend-setting research, challenging coursework and real-world impact that is highly respected around the world. At Michigan ME, we’re assembling the finest young graduate talent in the country and we are pleased that you would like to join our team. We encourage applications from students with diverse scientific backgrounds, such as other engineering disciplines, mathematics, physics, chemistry or biology. On average, students finish the SGUS/Master’s degree program in 1-3 years. Applicants applying to the SGUS program can apply no later than the junior year of their undergraduate program at the University of Michigan. Admission Guidelines • • • •
During the junior year, students must meet with the ME Undergraduate Student Advisor to file an intent form for the SGUS Program. The student will then work with the advisor to outline a preliminary course of study to make the appropriate course selections. At the time of filing the intent form, and completion of the Bachelor’s degree, students must have a minimum 3.6 cumulative GPA. Applicants should have strong letters of recommendation Applicants should have strong Statement of Purpose and Personal Statement (two separate essays)

Applications are accepted in March (fall) and October (winter). Domestic students are eligible to apply for GSI positions beginning their first term of enrollment. International students who have passed the UM Oral English Test are eligible to apply beginning their second term.

University of Michigan Department of Mechanical Engineering Sequential Graduate & Undergraduate Studies (SGUS) Quick Facts How to Apply The Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan regulates all graduate admissions, and the application for admission will therefore technically be made to Rackham. The ME Department will review all application materials and make a recommendation for admission or denial, following which, Rackham will officially confirm this decision. For detailed information on Rackham’s minimum admissions criteria and application procedures, please visit: http://www.rackham.umich.edu/Admis/prosp/apply.html Application Requirements Rackham Application fee: • U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents: $65 • Non-Residents: $75 Submit to Rackham with the online application: • Online application: o The online application can be found at: www.rackham.umich.edu/admissions/apply_now/applications_menu/ o Applicants are required to create an Apply-Web Account before filling out the online application. o Please adhere to the application deadlines when applying to the program. • 3 Letters of Recommendation: The electronic submission of recommendation letters is preferred. However, we do accept recommendation letters sent via the Postal Service or e-mail. Two of the three letters must come from university professors. • Statement of Purpose (SOP): The Statement of Purpose should be a concise, well-written statement about an applicant’s academic and research background, career goals, and how this graduate program will help meet career and educational objectives. • Personal Statement (PS): The Personal Statement is an essay about how an applicant’s background and life experiences, including cultural, geographical, financial, and educational or other opportunities or challenges, motivated the decision to pursue a graduate degree at the University of Michigan. For example, if an applicant grew up in a community where educational, cultural, or other opportunities were either especially plentiful or especially lacking, they might discuss the impact this had on their development and interests. This should be a discussion of the journey that has led to the decision to seek a graduate degree. • Curriculum Vitae (CV/Resume) • Scientific/technical writing publications/sample (optional): Applicants are encouraged to submit up to two publications that have been accepted by reputable peer-reviewed journals. Please note: if more than two writing samples are submitted, none shall be reviewed. These submissions are used to assist the department to match student and faculty interests and will not be a dominant factor in admission decisions. Submit Research Interest Form to Mechanical Engineering Department: • An e-mail notification will be sent from ME to applicants 1-3 weeks after the submission of the online application. The requested information should be filled out in order to avoid any delays in the application processing. Mail Official Transcripts to Rackham: • UM Ann Arbor students need not submit a transcript to Rackham. • Rackham does not accept transcripts from study abroad programs, junior, community, or a non-degree colleges. • ME does not accept scanned uploaded transcripts. Please do not upload any transcripts along with the application. • Cumulative GPA must be 3.6 or better in order to apply to the SGUS program. GRE test scores: • GRE test scores are not required if applying to the SGUS program. • If an applicant who originally applied to the SGUS program later decides to change their application program to the Ph.D. program, then GRE scores are required and SGUS status is no longer valid. o GRE scores are valid for five years from the test date. o GRE scores are sent via ETS; paper copies are not accepted. Admission decisions: • Winter terms: Admission decisions are made beginning mid-November through December. • Fall terms: Admission decisions are made beginning mid-March through April.
