University of South Dakota Inclement Weather Plan The University of South Dakota will use the following procedures in the event of inclement weather or lightning threats. Sports Medicine team will use Thunderbolt 300 Series lightning detector to monitor lightning threats in the area, as well as monitoring weather through the National Weather Service. When lighting threat is at or near a 10 mile radius of the USD Outdoor Complex, the emergency evacuation plan will be activated. Follow these steps to activate emergency evacuation for weather related emergency.
Appointed Athletic Trainer will make the call to suspend an event for weather related emergency. o Athletic Trainer will notify the event announcer to make an announcement from the following options via the PA system: Lightning 1

Tornado

“We have been notified that there is severe weather in the area. We ask all spectators to please proceed to the Dakota Dome for shelter. All athletes, coaches, and event personnel please proceed to the Wellness Center. Please proceed immediately.” “We have been notified that there is severe weather in the area. We ask all spectators, athletes, coaches, and event personnel to please proceed to the Dakota Dome for shelter immediately.” “We have been notified that there is severe weather in the area. We ask all spectators, athletes, coaches, and event personnel to please proceed to the Dakota Dome for shelter immediately.”
If an event is in progress, the officials will stop the event and clear competitors of the area; then all will proceed to shelter immediately. o Athletic Trainer and Event Manager will stay on site until all areas have been cleared completely. In accordance with NCAA rules, the event will resume no sooner than 30 minutes after the all clear has been given. The all clear will be given by the appointed Athletic Trainer when there are no signs of lightning or thunder and the weather monitoring systems show clear forecasts. Athletic Trainer and Event Manager will monitor the time and last indications of severe weather.
