2015 SEASON RECAP

The University of Victoria Vikes women’s field hockey team won the program’s 17th Canada West banner after an undefeated 7-0-1 record in 2015. The Vikes opened the season with an impressive five straight wins and no goals against until their 1-1 tie against UBC on Oct. 11. Their early success guaranteed the experienced Vikes squad the Canada West banner ahead of their final weekend of play. Fourth-year forward Amanda Kurianowicz led the Canada West in scoring, tied with Canada West MVP Hannah Haughn of UBC, with four goals. The Vikes had eight different goal scorers as they went on to out-score their opponents 16-1 with five of the Vikes’ shutouts credited to keeper Larissa Piva. Following their final regular season games the Vikes had four athletes named to the Canada West All-Star list. Kurianowicz and fourth-year midfielder Kathleen Leahy cracked the list for the third time. Both are also former CIS Championship All-Stars (Leahy in 2014, & 2013; Kurianowicz in 2014) and CIS All-Canadians (Leahy in 2013; Kurianowicz in 2014). Annie Walters-Shumka and Lizzie Yates were also named to the Canada West AllStar list. Head coach Lynne Beecroft, in her 32nd season, earned her fifth overall and second-straight nod as Canada West Coach of the Year and her first-ever nod as CIS COach of the Year. Leahy was also presented the Gail Wilson Award as the Most Outstanding Contributor and was the only Vikes named to the CIS All-Canadian list for 2015.
