U niversity o f Wisconsin H oofer M ountaineers. The new year ar­ rived with the sound of scraping skis during the annual H oofer trip to the W ind Rivers in Wyoming. Lack of snow ham pered the first w eek’s activities, while storms during the second week prevented any serious attem pts at climbing. Early in the year H oofers were treated to a visit by Prof. V ladim ir Voltchenko, a prom inent Soviet alpinist. H e climbed and skied w ith us and, along with Craig M artinson, showed slides of the recent AAC trip to the Soviet Union. Springtime saw the return of weekly trips to Devils Lake and G ibral­ tar Rock for rock climbing, with both experts and beginners in attend­ ance. D uring this season climbing trips w ent to the ‘Gunks, the Tetons, Rocky M ountain N ational Park, and Boulder, Colorado. A l Czecholinski and K en W ade m ade an all-free ascent of Longs Peak via the D iam ond. The year ended with a pig roast, ice climbing on the icicles of Lone Rock in Wisconsin, and preparation for the 1978 ski trips. John
