A New Creation

In the summer following my freshman year of high school I went on my youth group’s annual mission trip to Mexico. During our week, the temperature routinely topped out around 100°F. For several days in a row, my team worked outside repairing roofs or building small plywood homes. After the third day, we finished early enough that we were able to drive to a small strip mall where we could each pay to take a shower. I still remember vividly the feeling I had as the hot, clean water washed three days of sweat, dust and filth from me. It was a spiritual moment for me; I felt quite literally like a new person. In mere minutes, days of accumulated dirt had been washed away, and I was clean. What if it were that easy to become spiritually clean? What if instead of washing away days of sweat and dust, we could wash away a lifetime of sin, guilt and brokenness? What if instead of merely feeling clean, instead of simply feeling like a new person, we could actually become free of sin, actually receive new life? According to Paul, the gospel offers nothing less: “If anyone is in Christ, new creation has come.

We are a church in the city where people Connect to Christ, Grow in Christ, and Serve with Christ.

The old has gone; the new is here” (1 Co. 5.17). Because of the death and resurrection of Jesus, salvation and new life are now freely available to all. Baptism is not, of course, the means of salvation; the water does not literally wash away our sin, but it is a symbol of our salvation and a reminder of our new life in Christ. Baptism is the believer's opportunity to declare to the world that they have discovered such good news that they could not possibly keep silent. Baptism is the church’s opportunity to join with God and all the hosts of heaven in celebrating the adoption of another into God’s family. Baptism is God’s way of reminding us that we are participants now – today – in the new creation ushered in by the resurrection of Jesus. Bodily resurrection may be in our future, but new life in Christ is our present reality. Baptism, in short, is one of the moments when the joy of the individual believer, the joy of the church, and the joy of God and all heaven overlap together. At the baptism of every believer, the whole church joins in the celebration of heaven. If you have never been baptized, maybe now is the time to join in the celebration!

VBC 2013 --Recap There is so much that happened at VBC...here is just a small snapshot... 270 boys and girls came during the week; that’s the most kids we’ve ever had! Over 150 kids who came do not attend First Free! We also had 155 volunteers. Wow! That’s more volunteers than we’ve ever had, and the majority of our youth group volunteered...it’s an opportunity to grow in leadership! Our castle magician, Jack Nordin, gave a stunning magic show where he encouraged kids to Stand Strong for God! Twenty-two preschoolers had a blast at Pip’s Preschool Palace, seventeen Tower Tots adorned the nursery, and the kids were intrigued with the five storytellers during the week! Rick Olson portrayed King David; Cheryl Vatsaas played Queen Esther; Mark McClun personified Nehemiah; Pastor Jay Pound spoke as a Centurion, and Seth Mellema made an appearance as King Josiah.

Welcome, New Babies! Eleni Grace O'Neil was born 6/27. She weighed 7 lbs 2 oz, 19 inches. Congrats, parents DJ & Danah & big brother Oliver! Sadie Lynnae Lehner was born 7/3. She weighed in at 7lbs 13 oz. and is 21 inches long. Congrats, parents Pete & Erica & big sister Annika!

Missions Opportunity

Kids brought their neighbors! New friends came everyday! Lots of inflatable swords & princess wands were given out to our new friends and the ones who brought them! New friendships were made among the kids and the adults as well. We also raised over $700 for Bibles for BOMA! Pastor Mark and the youth going to the Dominican Republic used this money to purchase Bibles for children in the DR. Please allow me to thank our talented, hard-working VBC team, the Kingdom Rock Court: Vanessa Beckett, Loren Chantland, Marilyn Fisher, Erika Garcia, Paulette Goodman, Mike Graff, Katie Klenk, Sherie McClun, Mark Meyers, Melinda Meyers, Ben Nordell, Jan Nyholm, Beth Olson, Pam Owen, and Priscilla Riveness. I praise God for this church family and the opportunity to watch them come together to serve kids and families brings much JOY! Everyone is filled with JOY during VBC! Stand Strong!
