NALYTIC SYSTEMS PROVIDES CUSTOM DESIGNED power conversion products for the specific needs of virtually any industry—from the military to markets in the commercial marine, industrial, transportation, telecommunications and oil and gas sectors. Under the company’s founder, Lloyd Hargrove, a veteran of the Canadian military in anti-submarine warfare, Analytics Systems has pioneered a number of products. As an inventor, Hargrove and later, his son Jim Hargrove, Analytic Systems President, established a whole new market altogether, developing a line of products ranging from DC/DC Converters, DC battery chargers, AC battery chargers, voltage converters, DC/ AC inverters, and AC/DC power supplies. The company was also one of the first to build a truly reliable DC/ AC Puresine inverter, the IPS Series—a product line increasingly popular with every year to this day. “We work in a niche market,” says Bill Walker, VP of Sales and Marketing, “in high performance, highquality, long lasting power conversion products.”

SYSTEMS THAT SAVE LIVES

Since the start of the millennium, Analytic Systems has supplied over 10,000 power supplies that operate the Modern Burner Unit (electronic stove) for the US Army Field Kitchens around the world, with less than a 0.01 per cent return/repair rate on those products. The company initialized its involvement and reputation in the military sector with this product— nearly doubling its business over night. Under a series of other Allied forces programs over the years, Analytic Systems has helped develop power systems for a number of life-saving products, such as IED Defeat systems operated from in front of vehicles to knock out improvised explosive devices (IEDs). “I wanted to thank you guys for being open to the necessary design changes and feature additions,” commented the Engineer in charge of the program. “I also wanted to point out that this purchase is due largely to the outstanding performance of the LADC. Quite frankly, an early failure probably would have

cancelled the entire effort.” “With that project, we can wake up in the morning knowing that if we do our jobs right that day, we’ll probably be able to say we saved somebody’s life,” says Walker. “It’s a nice way to go into work.” For areas where the transportation of fuel is especially dangerous, the military’s ability to make more use of alternative energy methods means a decrease in the number of deaths associated with

the movement of fuel tankers and convoys in areas like Afghanistan. Analytics Systems has developed alternative energy solution products such as solar charge controllers, as well as products designed to provide power from a variety of vehicles like the vehicle mounted charger (VMC). For the past six to seven years Analytic Systems had designed and built rugged power conversion products that support intelligence, surveillance and radar (ISR) systems to provide greater security to Allied soldiers abroad. In collaboration with DEW Engineering and Weatherhaven, Analytic Systems has also developed power supplies and battery chargers for the Canadian Forces’ shelter program—a key area in moving oversees military opportunities forward. “One of the program managers of the shelter product system called our products the ‘heartbeat of the system,’” says Walker.

For the safety those products have provided, the military has remained highly invested in Analytic Systems’ products over the years. In 2005, the lightweight counter mortar radar (LCMR) system was deemed the most significant product of the year by the General in charge of the US Army. The LCMR system is powered by a custom power supply from Analytic Systems. For the last three years, the company has also been working on units for powering the universal ground control station (UGCS) used for both the US Army’s and US Marine Corps’ UAV programs. FASTEST IN THE INDUSTRY

With about 7 different product families, Analytic Systems is not only constantly making improvements and updating its product lines, but also developing project specific products to suit individualized needs of its customers. “They’re knocking down the doors,” says Paul

Bowler, Vice President of Operations and Engineering. “Fortunately, we have an incredible team of developers that can turn their ideas into a real product.” With multiple and varying types of orders coming in every day, Analytic Systems has learned what it takes to be agile and respond to customers’ needs quicker than its competitors. “A good portion of our unique selling proposition is that we can take a commercial product off the shelf and modify it to fit a customer’s requirements whether if it’s for one unit or 1,001 units,” says Walker “Most of our competitors are simply not willing to do that.” In meeting those challenges, the company employs a system of lean manufacturing practices in addition to building strategic alliances with suppliers that can keep up. “We’re quite passionate about the benefits and improvements we’ve made through lean manufacturing over the last five years,” says Bowler. “Keeping a continuous flow of smaller quantities of

product has made it easier to manage quality and overall processes. The turnaround time for a customer has gone from a typical 12 weeks to anywhere from 7 to 10 days for 99 per cent of customers. On time delivery has gone from 20 per cent to 99 per cent —a phenomenal improvement in performance.” That same philosophy translates into engineering and managing projects. As a family-owned and operated business, collaboration, dialogue and continuous improvement are central components of the company’s culture. Staff are encouraged to have open, spontaneous discussions to resolve issues on a daily basis. “In addition to being lean, we

High-tech systems to track project flows and an acquired surface mount automation line have helped with the mass production of products at a faster rate that rivals others in the industry. “That’s especially beneficial to the military,” says Walker. “It’s allowed us to build a more rugged, higher-quality, lower-cost product rapidly.” With great success from a previous event, Analytic Systems has been asked to again host the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters/National Research Council, Innovation and Insight tour, May 29/12. As the economy picks itself back up, Walker predicts 2012 will be a record year of growth.
