UQSM 2017 – BABY LOCK EMBROIDERY CHALLENGE For 2017, we are excited to have a new quilt challenge sponsored by Baby Lock. This challenge will be a machine embroidery challenge. This challenge is open to one to two individuals per entry. Individuals may be involved in only one quilt. 1. Submitted quilt must contain machine embroidered animal designs supporting the challenge theme “Quilting is Zoopendous.” One-third (33 %) of the completed quilt top is to display machine embroidery. Designs may be realistic or animated. 2. Machine embroidered designs may include any of the following techniques/stitch styles: outline, applique, satin, fill stitches or a combination of any of these machine embroidery techniques. Appliqued items must contain supplementary machine embroidery on top of the appliqued fabric in addition to the machine embroidery technique used for appliqueing fabric to the background fabric. 3. Designs may be originally digitized or commercially purchased. Information giving credit to the designs’ creators must be supplied in the write-up description of your entry. Entrant is responsible for validating no copyright laws are violated. 4. Quilt is to be constructed using a piecing technique, and must be three layers, consisting of quilt top, batting, and backing fabric. Participants choose and supply their own fabrics. Batting may be 80/20 Cotton/Poly or 100% wool for the fill. Additional batting and batting types may be added for special quilting techniques such as trapunto. 5. The quilt must be machine quilted. This includes longarm, domestic, or embroidered design quilting. No false backs permitted. Quilting must be seen on the backside of the quilt, as well as the quilt top. 6. The quilt’s perimeter must exceed 96” but no larger than 320”. 7. The quilt must have a binding. 8. The quilt may include embellishments of any kind, including, but not limited to: buttons, charms, crystals, ribbons/lace, applique or other attachments. 9. One ribbon will be awarded to each winning quilt. Cash awards will be mailed to winners. 12.
