ICONS

paintings by

Hillary Wood By isolating forms and images in a frame, on a wall, in a room, we are going through a process of deliberate iconogrification. The artifact becomes the icon." The images in these paintings have been taken from the architecture of the inner city - alleys, hidden courtyards, small factories - and framed in window frames found in those areas. What is left when the workers are gone are their artifacts. The paintings are therefore artifacts of artifacts. That is the nature of realist painting. "Alchemy, or the coming-to-wholeness of the individual," Wood says, "consists of recognition of the value in that which is generally overlooked or despised." She feels that if we cannot find the grace in ordinary daily life then we are doomed to a perpetual and ultimately fruitless search for the exotic or novelty. "It is the nature of novelty to be exhausted the moment it is percieved." It is in part these sentiments which have prompted the choice of the humble egg as medium, the undistinguished building as subject and the found window as frame. Hillary Wood is one of only a handful of artists currently using the ancient medium of egg tempera - a mixture of pigment and egg yolk. Practiced in the Middle Ages, it fell out of favour with rise of oil painting but saw a brief rebirth in the 1930*s and 40"s. URBAN ICONS is her first protracted exploration of that medium.
