Pac-12 students are k nown for their athletic success, but they are also impressive, complete people with outside interests,
diverse backgrounds, extracurricular activities, interesting families, busy schedules, and full lives. The release for this week’s competition is focused on who USC students are in the classroom and community. ACADEMIC SPOTLIGHT
Junior Steven Stumph, the 2015 Pac-12 200y breaststroke champion and a big part of USC’s Pac-12 team title last year, embodies what it means to be a Trojan student-athlete. Throughout his three years at USC, Stumph has managed to achieve excellence in both the classroom and the swimming pool. He earned 2015 College Swimming Coaches Association of America’s Scholar All-America first team honors and was a 2015 Pac-12 All- Academic second teamer. An All-American, Stumph will look to defend his Pac-12 title in March and will continue to train for the U.S. Olympic Trials once the college season ends. Stumph is pursuing a progressive masters degree in Linguistics and East Asian languages and Culture. With a passion for language and culture, along with a prestigious 4.0 Masters GPA, Stumph was able to work in Shenzhen, China, last summer as an intern at a clothing manufacturing company called Starline Textiles. Upon graduation, he hopes to become a linguistic liaison between Germany and America allowing him to continue his passion of travelling.
COMMUNITY CORNER
* The entire USC men’s and women’s team has adopted the South L.A.-based Bethune Middle School and has worked with its students for the past year to not only overcome fears of water while learning to swim but to develop important life skills as well. The program, kick-started by USC junior and former Trojan swimmer Jamie Christy, includes weekly visits to the school by various USC swimmers. On Nov. 21, in conjunction with the Trojan Swim Club, USC held a fundraising event – the Fall Challenge -- for the program. The day before, USC swimmers visited the school for a clinic with students and their parents. * USC’s swimmers and divers annually participate in and raise money for Troy’s multi-million-dollar benefit, Swim With Mike, that raises money for college scholarships for student-athletes with physical challenges. The annual swim-a- thon was established in 1981 and was originally scheduled to be a one-time event. It was organized by friends and teammates on behalf of Mike Nyeholt, a three- time All-American swimmer who was paralyzed from the chest down following a motorcycle accident suffered in January of 1981. More than $58,000 was raised in the first swim and the total has since swelled to close to $17 million with nearly 200 total scholarships granted to 90 universities, representing 60 sports. While USC’s annual event is set for April 2, fundraisers have sprouted to many schools, including Cal, UConn, Hawaii, Stanford, Arizona and UC Santa Barbara. TOP PERFORMERS Brianna Weinstein, a senior and team leader, is an exceptional example of a well-rounded student- athlete. Throughout her four years she has consistently scored at the Pac-12 Championships in her primary events, the 200y breaststroke and 200y individual medley. Weinstein is majoring in business administration and is an influential member of USC’s TAS (Trojan Athlete Senate) committee. Her significant involvement in TAS allowed her to be a representative on the Pac-12 student-athlete advisory committee. As part of this committee she traveled to the Pac- 12 headquarters in San Francisco to discuss how to improve the student-athletes experience and involvement throughout their college career. With an entrepreneurial streak, Weinstein hopes to eventually build her own business.
