ASEAN-Korea Environmental Cooperation Project as a Successful Model of Regional Cooperation for Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development
Date: Thursday, 23nd November 2017 Time: 13:30 - 14:30 pm Venue: S201 Abstract: The ASEAN-Korea Environmental Cooperation Project (AKECOP) as a catalyst for attaining sustainable natural resources management in the region became prominent and relevant. Being a regional collaborative partnership it supports ASEAN Member States in generating scientific knowledge, sharing information and experiences, and enhancing human and institutional capacity through the phased steps since 2000. The main goal of the AKECOP Project was to enhance the capacity of AMS in managing and conserving the rich biodiversity and natural ecosystems in a sustainable manner through the collaborative research partnership, capacity building, and scientific and technical information sharing in the ASEAN region.
Speaker Profile Dr. Ho Sang Kang got Ph.D. in Seoul National University in the field of forest ecology and silviculture. He worked as Global Forest Information Service Regional Coordinator for Asia and Russia. He was a Project Manager (Capacity Building of School of Environmental Conservation and Ecotourism Management in Indonesia) of KOICA from 2007-2009 and Secretary General of AKECOP from 2009 to 2016. At present, he has several international cooperation projects including East Asia Biodiversity Conservation Network (EABCN) in the Northeast Asia and Center for Combat Desertification in Arid and Semi-Arid (CCDASA) that is to establish cooperative network and development of capacity building programs for combating desertification and land degradation in arid and semi-arid areas in Asia and Africa. He has also involved to establish Asia Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO), a intergovernmental organization in Korea and now supporting the survey of plant biodiversity in Lao PDR and Myanmar.
